South Beach Diet A Scam?
67What is the South Beach Diet?
Here is an excerpt from wikipedia.com that best explains the true beginnings of the South Beach Diet.
The South Beach Diet is a diet plan designed by cardiologist Arthur Agatston and dietician Marie Almon as an alternative to low-fat approaches such as the Ornish Diet and the Pritikin Diet advocated by the American Heart Association in the 1980s. Although the original purpose of the diet was to prevent heart disease in Dr. Agatston's own patients, in the early 2000s, word of the diet spread and quickly gained popularity as a means to lose weight .
So far so good right? I mean who doesn't want to have a healthy heart and lose weight in the process?
The whole structure of the South Beach Diet is broken down into three phases. In phase 1 you are not allowed to have bad food which is basically your sugars, carbohydrates, all fruits, and some vegetables.
Ummm...do you see anything wrong with that last sentence?
You don't get to eat any fruits and some vegetables???
They say that this process eliminates the hunger cycle. Which is basically what helps us stay survive by telling us when our body needs protein.
So your probably thinking like me...what exactly do I get to eat on this diet? Well...you get to eat "vegetables, beans, and whole grains." - wikipedia.com.
UMMMMMM ummmmm...honey, will you past the whole grains please?
Stage 2 gets a little bit better. Now you get to add a few fruits to your delicious meal. This stage can last as long as you want to lose weight or until you shrivel up like a california prune.
"Phase 3" is the maintenance phase and lasts for life. There is no specific list of permitted and prohibited foods. Instead, the dieter is expected to understand the basic principles of the diet and live by them. - wikipedia.com
So I guess they just kind of figure that you know what to do from here and they leave you to your own vices. I just wish I had as much faith in me as they do.
I'm not going to say that this diet doesn't work or that its a "scam" or whatever but it looks to me like they are wanting to starve the body of its nutrients and anti-oxidants as a replacement of good ole exercise.
In fact, I know of an exercise system that has worked miracles in people's lives and they got to eat fruits and vegetables while doing it. That last part there was a little joke in case you didnt notice.
