At Chipotle Mexican Grill, there are a few great options for Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet or any low carb plan. That's because you can forego the burrito or taco shells, and simply order a specialty burrito as a bowl. You can also order a salad. The key is to stick to certain meats, salsas, and vegetables and to avoid others. Here is what we uncovered from a sample Chipotle menu:

Burrito Bowl--First off, avoid the rice. Simply order this with pinto or black beans, meat (choice of chicken, steak, pork carnitas, or barbecue beef*), salsa (tomato, tomatillo-green chili, or tomatillo-red chili**), cheese, sour cream and romaine lettuce. Guacamole can be substituted for the meat for a vegetarian option. Perhaps they would substitute guacamole for rice as well.

*Things to keep in mind: the barbecue beef is braised with chipotle sauce and spices, so appears to be acceptable. **And you should avoid the Roasted Chili-corn salsa.

Fajita Burrito Bowl--Same as the Burrito Bowl, but instead of beans, they substitute sauteed peppers and onions.

Salad--Romaine lettuce with your choice of beans, meat, salsa and cheese. It's topped with chipotle-honey vinaigrette, so order this on the side and use it sparingly, or use your own concoction of salsa mixed with sour cream.

Beverages--Acceptable beverages at Chipotle are water, diet soft drinks or coffee.
