South Carolina Ghosts, Lands End Lights

In the 1940's there was a Trailways Bus that wrecked just south of Beaufort South Carolina on its way to Savanna Georgia. The driver of the bus actually lost his head in the wreck when he was thrown thru the windshield of the bus and into water beside the road. And even though the police and other people searched for his head it was never found. It was assumed that as the wreck happened at 3 AM that a animal probably got the mans head and run off into the swamps with it.

Shortly after the wreck people started to talk about a bright light that looked like a ball of fire right near where the tragic bus wreck happened. Some people claimed to see a man walking along the roadside and when they would get near enough they would see that the man had no head. Some people were so scared they ran off the road.

Other people claim they see the ball of light roll right down the middle of the road near where the 1940's bus wreck happened and some have even claimed the ball of light appears to chase their vehicle.

It was also in this same area where the big oak trees are just south of Beaufort where several run away slaves were hung. There are some who think the balls of light in the road has something to do with the ghosts of the slaves who were hung. Before the civil war slaves who ran away several times were often hung from the large oak trees south of Beaufort as a message to other slaves of what would happen to them if they ran away.

It is also from one of these large old oak trees south of Beaufort that Confederate Colonel Richard Thompson was hung by Union forces for looting. It is said that he claimed he was innocent and that when he was hung his head popped loose from his body. There are people who claim the light is Thompson still looking for his head. He and his head were buried under one of the large oaks.
