Think of South Carolina. Many people who have never been there and even many who visited the beach areas think of middle class fun at Myrtle Beach, historic Charleston and better have lots of money Hilton Head Island. They may also think of Spanish Moss draped Live Oaks or tall swaying Palm Trees (the state tree is the Palmetto). Many are also part of or familiar with good old Clemson and Gamecock football.

However may will be surprised to know that the Upstate SC area is a mountain area. The mountain section of SC is not large, running from SC Scenic Highway 11 north to the NC line. The maximum elevation is top of Sassafras Mountain with an elevation of 3560 feet so we are not talking Rocky Mountain elevations but for people in this area these are mountains!

South Carolina even has trout fishing many upstate streams and lakes such as Lake Jocassee and the Eastatoe River well as the famed Chatooga River. The evevations are sufficent tom kepe the water cold enough for the trout, especially Brown Trout which can take warmer water.

Where there are mountains there is hiking. The SC mountain area abounds with great hiking trails. There is the Chattooga River Trail along the where the movie Deliverance was filmed. Other great trails are the Foothills Trail and Table Rock State Park trail network.
