Southwest Airlines, the low fare airline based in Dallas, Texas, is the largest airline in the United States and the third largest airline in the world. Most of the Southwest tickets are given directly by the airline via the phone or online at the company's website which exclusively features Web only fare discounts. Southwest Airlines enables its passengers to change reservations without charging penalty. Although this offers immense flexibility to customers, Southwest Airlines permits same-day standby travel on another flight only after upgrading to maximum fare.

Customers are not assigned seats; instead, they are assigned to a "boarding group" based on their check-in time, and have to find their own seats on the plane.
