Joel Madden & Nicole Richie have named their new son Sparrow James Midnight Madden. Nicole announced via her official website that he was born on 9 September 2009 "He weighs 7lbs 14oz. Nicole, Joel, Harlow and Sparrow are all doing well. Thank you for all of your good wishes". On his Twitter page Joel also announced "1st day of his life & my son is already a trending topic on twitter. That's right son, ur just like your old man". Well, of course it would be a topic of gossip, afterall, how many people name their child after an ANIMAL? Only a Celebrity!

First we had Celebrity children named after fruit - Bob Geldof's daughter Peaches and Gweneth Paltrow's daughter Apple - Throw in a Banana or Apricot and we could have a whole Celebrity classroom of Fruit-Salad!

But now there's a Celebrity child named after an animal - a boy with a Bird's name. If other Celebrities vying for the same attention Sparrow is receiving copy this trend, maybe they can create an entire Zoo or a farm between them!

It's difficult to understand their choice as a Sparrow is not a particularly exciting bird species. Infact it's a dull looking, common bird species, not even as exciting as a Budgie! Wikipedia gives the definition of Sparrow, in part as "Generally, sparrows tend to be small, plump brown-grey birds with short tails and stubby". "They are primarily seed eaters, though they also consume small insects. A few species scavenge for food around cities and, like gulls or pigeons, will happily eat virtually anything in small quantities".

If chosing a Bird name for a child, one could think of much more striking Bird Species, but possibly equally contriversial, such as "Parrot" or "Tucan", "Rainbow Lorikeet", "Owl", "Kookaburra", "Peacock" or even "Bluebird". Maybe these are the names of future children of other Celebrities!
