Sign Language

Learning Sign Language

Sign language

You may think that you have no need for learning the art of sign language. Maybe right now, you don't. But you do not know what the future may hold.

You may meet someone who is death and this would be a ideal way to communicate with him/her. You may even develop a hearing problem yourself or someone you know or love could.

But like many people who learns it, you might just want the ability just in case.

Learning sign language is like learning anything. It takes practice. It takes patience.

What is the best method of studying sign language?

You could take a class? You could hire a teacher to teach you one on one. You could even learn via the internet.

The internet idea may surprise many people. But in fact there are many websites that offers help in teaching people the art of sign language including videos.

For those people who are not so familiar with sign language here is a few facts about it. First of all, one may think that in signing they would only use their hands. But in fact one uses body language, body movement of the hands, arms, and even the face, facial expressions, as well as lip patterns to convey thoughts.

Many people may also think that sign language is the same world wide. Yet, this is a wrong conclusion. Sign language is like any other language. It can differ from region to region.

Sign language also has its own art. In fact, there is a growing number of sign language speaking poets and other stage performers. Without the shared knowledge of sign they couldn't reach their audiences and touch them with their words as they are doing now.

Most people begin to learn how to sign by first learning the sign language alphabet. Yet, as one advances in sign language they will soon begin to learn the patterns to form words. You may wonder what is the sense then in learning the alphabet method. The reason for learning it is simple. If you fail to know the gesture or pattern for a word, you can always spell it letter for letter if you know the alphabet signs. One can sign the alphabet in one or two hands. Generally, a right handed person will favor the right hand and vise versa. Yet, most signers have no trouble using both hands.

If you are using the letter to letter spelling method to explain a word, you would pause or stress the last letter a bit longer to show that you were finished with the first word and moving on to the next one.

If you make a mistake in spelling, you should make a facial expression signaling the mistake.

Then begin again.

You should also remember to make eye contact when you are signing. The eye contact is essential in keeping the attention of your listener. If you break away from the eye contact, your listener may think you are finish talking or that you are pausing to think.

Since the eye contact is a crucial factor in speaking sign, you should also realize that it is in poor taste to wear sunglasses when trying to communicate this way. Of course, if you are in a setting such as a beach then they would be considered appropriate, just make sure they are light in color and when speaking face the person who is signing. This shows that the speaker has your full attention.

Another thing that is considered rude when signing is breaking eye contact or glancing away repeatedly, as if you are wondering what is going on around you and the speaker. Try not to do this or you will offend the person who is signing.

Sign language does take practice. Most people will suggest that you practice daily and that you practice in front of a mirror. This gives you the ability to see your own hands and fingers moving.

Don't get discouraged if you don't master sign language in a day or two. Remember it takes patience and time to learn how to move your fingers accordingly. Don't give up because learning how to sign could be an invaluable tool someday.

The sign language is a very, very good way of communicating even to people who arent deaf or handicapped. It is considered body language and even considered art to some.

A very good post about someone who learned the art can be found here
