Art of Conversation

Oral Communication

Many think that speaking and talking are same.Even dictionaries rarely make the difference. But experience says all talks are not of same effect. Some are hearty and some are just told. Hence there is the necessity to recognise the difference between the two.Oral communication is day by day getting more and more importance. It is now recognized as an art. One who erpeerts in it, get greater success in life. There is a proverb iun kannada which means-'words spoiled the house, and a hole(in the cooking pot) spoiled the burning oven'.

Speech and Talk

By 'speech' we should mean such spoken words which are softly said, with all humility and humbleness, with an intension to enlighten the listener either with thesubject knowledge , or with good advise intended to modify the behaviour.

'Talk' , on the other hand, should mean such words which are spoken only to show the superiority, power, or influence, egoism, etc. The 'Talks' are never hearty. nor they are enlightening.(Excluding the use of this word with reference to lecture talks by good speakers).

Talk may win

Speech reaches the hearts. But talk does'nt looses always. On certain occassions, talk only wins. For eg: election campaigns in India( with certain exceptions, ofcourse). Talks may bring in practical benefits sometimes. But it rarely wins hearts.

Speech on the contrary, looses sometimes, eventhough genuine. But that is always due to the negligence , or underestimation on the part of the listener, not due to defect in speech. Such people later repent for discarding such speeches.

So.......

Let us speak , instead of only 'talking'.And , let us learn to value the speeches uttered by others, for our own benefit. That makes them happy and keeps us on the positive , profiting side.

Very interesting factors are nicely told in this article. Nobody had told these differences so nicely.

There seems to be a difference between speech and talk. Speech may mean a public address, or an oration. Normally, one puts more effort in a speech than an ordinary talk.

Speech- is often used in that sense, but not always. Especially,'speaking' means normal, meaningful talk.

Generally, What your friend  told is correct. But, your sentence construction is not gramatically wrong. Here, it is related to sementics i.e.meaning.Speech-is used to more serious, planned talk.Talking is usually a casual one,and personal. In some socieites, these are used as synonyms.

Yes,that's why quarrels and/or misunderstandings start. What we should speak, should be mentally thought prior. Then communication will be successful and gives intended result.Unthought speech often will be ambiguous.

There is a proverb in Kannada which means-'talk spoiled the home. and the hole(in the cooking pot) spoiled the oven'.Is it not true?

Mathew Arnold has rightly told-'control of tongue is the begining of knowledge.Control of mind is the consumation of knowledge'.

Let the secceh and talk enlighten us.Let these be enjoyable, not aggrievable.
