SWAT

SWAT is the name for a special operations and special weapons police enforcement. SWAT is mostly found in America, but other countries such as Australia, England, and Taiwan also have special units. SWAT stands for Special Weapons and Tatics. SWAT officers are trained just like regular police officers, but more advanced and harder. Some areas in which SWAT officers are trained are high-risk warrants, hostages, and perticually dangerous situations that regular police officers are not specifically trained to carry out. Since SWAT officers are trained for dangerous situations, they are armed with many cool, but serious weapons. For example, SWAT officers are armed with assult rifles, shotguns, grenades, and high powered guns, such as snipers. They also wear heavy clothing and specialized vests for safety. SWAT also drives big, metal trucks that provide much protection for the officers.

History

SWAT begin in 1967 with a man by the name of Daryl Gates from the Los Angeles Police Dept. The original SWAT stood for "Special Weapons Assult Team" or "Special Weapons Attack Team". John Nelson was the man who first thought of creating a specialized task force in the dept. Since 1967, SWAT has been a big help in aiding police officers on hard tasks. In February 2008, there was a gun-fight in California which unfortunately ended with the passing of a SWAT officer. This was the first death of a SWAT officer since the 41 years it has been in progress.

SWAT Positions

SWAT duties include the following:

Hostage Rescue

Crime Suppression

Perimeter Security against Snipers

Provide Superior Assult Firepower in certain situations

Countering Terrorist Ops in the U.S.

Resolved High-Risk situations with little/no life lost

Resolved Situations involving barricades

Stabilize Situations involving high-risk suicide

Provide Assistance on Drug Raids, Arrest, or Search Warrants

Provide Security at Special Events

Stabilize Dangerous Situations dealing with Violent Crimes

Weapons

Like I said above, the SWAT team uses special, high quality firepower to aid in their missions. Some common ones are the submachine guns, assult rifles, sniper rifles, and shotguns. Tactical units use weapons such as grenades and K9 units.

Vehicles

ARV are also used in transportation of the SWAT units. ARV stands for Armored Rescue Vehicle. The ARV can also be used as a weapon. How you ask? Well, the front of the ARV has a bar where you can tie stuff to. To break in and enter the house, police tie a strong rope to the front of the ARV and the door knob and the ARV reverses, blowing off the door creating an easy way to get into the house.

Well, I hope you learned alot! Thanks for reading
