Over the last year, I have found that offering free downloads makes a lot of sense to get people on your list and to get people ready for a product that you are launching.

A way to do that is to write a special report on the topic that your related product is going to cover. The object of the report is to confirm the necessity of your product.

One of the biggest issues with writing your own reports is that most people do not have the first clue how to write an effective report. They go on and on and don't really help to prepare anyone for the product that you eventually want to pitch them.

The whole sequence of a special report is to give readers a heads up on the problem that they face. You tell them the problem and make it very real for them. You agitate the problem and then you offer solutions with the disclaimer that these solutions are only partial solutions and you give the reasons.

Then you start to hint at the ultimate solution (your product) and you tell them why it is the best solution. At that point you tell the reader how to get to your product.

Since most people don't have the basic premise, you often see reports that are really sales pages for the product. This turns off readers and they rarely buy unless they were presold on the idea that they needed the product.
