Cat Food Mini Review

_________________

Special Kitty Gourmet Blend Wal Mart Brand

  • Animal Digest - Plus 1 point = No animal Digest
  • Corn - Minus 2 points = corn
  • Extra Goodies - Minus 1 point = corn listed twice plus lots of artifical added stuff

Total Score = 1/4

Corn is a cheap filler used by pet food companies to reduce production costs. Gluten is a super concentrated mix as is "meal". So the corn in this mix is actually at least 5 times or more the amount listed.

We should take time out from this review to remind ourselves of the good and bad effects of corn in a cat or dog's diet. *Corn, wheat and soy are resonsible for fever, ear aches, ear infections, bad bread, dental disease, hair loss, dry and itchy skin, bloat, tumors, warts, moles, abnormal nail growth, arthritis, deafness, blindness, digestive problems, inflamed liver, inflamed kidneys, bladder problems, heart problems, and death. Oh yeah, for the good effects of corn - reduces the cost of pet food production.

*The label is split so you don't read the bad ingredients first. The way the label is place the reader sees 'natural flavors, chicken, tuna, crab, and lobster' listed first. On careful examination of the label these are only added flavors and are not part of the actual meat in the product. The meat is chicken by-product only.

Do you have another dog or cat food you would like to have tested? Please submit a comment and I'll check it out.

My son's cat got kidney failure and mine got vomiting and diarrhea from eating Special Kitty cat food from WalMart. It is a shame that Walmart cares more about making a few more cents on each pack then they do about our pet's well being. We are going to sue Walmart as it cost my son over $1,200 in vet bills not to mention the anguish of not knowing if his cat was going to make it. He has a very expensive Savannah cat.

Please let me know how the cat is doing in the future and how your law suit goes. I have been very upset with Purina for the same reasons you mention above. We really need to be more aware of what is on the pet food labels! This review of Wal Mart brand cat food isn't as inclusive as it probably should be.

I'm working on a new rating system which includes all the label listings. Sadly, Wal Mart doesn't list the product contents any place on the web. Someone has to purchase the products to find out what the stuff is made of.

Like your kitties, my dog got sick while trying to do these reviews. I had to stop "testing" on her (as I have my cat, too).

Thank you,

Please contact me. My cat ALSO developed kidney disease. I fed my cat Science Diet for years, then switched. He has been in and out of the vets office - with kidney disease after switching to Special Kitty.

Madelaine...I'm working on Science Diet reviews as we speak. For the dogs....it's not looking so go. Lots of stuff in there they can't handle. I haven't gotten to the cat food yet. Word of advice, stay away from The Goodlife Recipe!

Madelain, I'm not sure which one of us you would like to have contact you. You may contact me though my email asksusanpeters@homail.com and if the reader would like to contact me there also I'll put you both into contact with each other.

Thank you,

One of my mother in laws cats died from Kidney failure and her other one's kidney's are starting to shut down too. The vet said that Special Kitty from Walmart is probably causing this. He switched the remaining cats diet in hopes of preventing the kidneys from failing completely but don't know if it is too late. I am taking my cat off of Special Kitty completely. Anything that starts off with chicken by products as the first ingredient can not be good.

I heard from a friend about a news story today about Walmart brand Special Kitty cat food causing kidney failure. I would love information or link to any news stories or recalls. I am also treating a cat at home that is in having kidney failure issues. They because severe last week and that was when it was discovered. Everything posted here if VERY familiar and this could have been developing over a long period of time.

I am really concerned about this. I feed my adult female Special Kitty canned cat food twice a day - about 1/4 to 1/3C. each sitting. She has chronic bowel compactions, so I mix in a quarter tsp. Metamucil with each feeding. She eats Special Kitty Indoor Formula (manufactured by Purina) during the day. She has shown no symptoms of kidney failure as yet but she does spit up once in awhile. The recall of Menu Foods brands of cat foods has scared me silly...I don't know that Special Kitty wet canned food is manufactured by them. I don't know what to feed her now! She doesn't seem to like anything else canned that I bring home. Oh, and another interesting thing: the news stories about this said there would be info posted on menufoods website (www.menufoods.com/recall)? Guess what? THERE IS NO WEBSITE! maybe I'm jumping the gun, but I'm worried about my girl!

Terri T.  says:

Well, WHEW! I did jump the gun; the menufoods website is up and gives the brands, UPC codes and types of wet foods affected by this recall. Sorry. I panicked. :)

This is exactly what I have been feeding my Cat for several years. Mixed with another brand of canned food. I have several packages of 8 different "flavors" in my house with the recall codes. Now what do consumers do? On top of the amounts of this crap I have bought in the past and currently have here, I have and will have more Vet bills. Still to early to know if the damage done can be reversed for my Cat. What would be the best course of action on something like this?

I made the first trip to the vet March 9th. Kidney failure was the diagnosis, which I was told symptons can not be visable for some time if it was age related. Course of action we started was the SQ fluid treatments at home. She has been responding, slowly each day and has begun to eat and drink again, but its been a slow process. Fortunately during this time my cat has refused to eat that brand. She is eating Purina Fancy Feast canned food at this time. We go to the Vet today to re-test her blood levels to see how she is doing. I am taking the the press release and story from our local paper today with me to the Vet.

Joyce, I did a review just for you on Fancy Feast Cat Food. What flavor are you feeding? See Link at top of the page

Back from the Vet. The levels of nitrates in the blood are half of what they were last Friday, but still 5-6 times higher than they should be. The Vet office had briefly heard of the recall and wanted to really check into it before commenting on if this is what caused our problem. But sounds as if the kidney failure cannot be reversed or stopped. I will have to continue home SQ fluids indefinately. For now anyway.

Currently the Fancy Feast flavors are Ocean whitefish & Tuna, Cod, Sole & Shrimp and Savory Salmon Feasts. My cat does not seem to care for the chunkier versions in gravy.

I just put my cat Lucky (estimate-11 yrs old) to sleep this morning. she had renal failure, and her organs were shutting down. I have fed her special kitty in the foil pouches and the dry as well. for most of her life.

I also would be intrested in what the consumers are suposed to do.

mds4hf  says:

Ok, so I feed my cat Special Kitty but it is mainly the hard food, every once in a while I give her CANNED soft food as a treat (not the stuff in the foil/plastic package) she has always been in perfect health. I am pretty sure the recall at least in special kittys case is mainly the soft packet soft food.

The main thing I wanted to let people know is that it says Purina is NOT on that list..... but my parents feed their dog purina and he has been severly ill. They went to purinas website and their upc's matched the recall stuff... Purina supposedly is not part of this recall since they dont use menu foods manufacturing but my dad said the numbers matched. Best thing to do at this point is to go specifically to each brands site and start checking around.

The dog stopped eating purina's food and is no longer throwing up and will actually eat.

Great advice! Just because a food product is not on the recall list YET doesn't mean it won't be. The company is supposed to give a full release of the brands March 18th. As always, check the label on any pet food and make sure it has in it stuff you would eat!

My seemingly healthy 2 year old cat died of kidney falure two weeks ago after eating this off and on for two weeks. He ate this exclusively (he didn't eat canned food).

I'm reading your comments and all the stories are all too painful, fresh, and unexpected. I JUST LOST SOMEONE I LOVE!

My other cat is 8 but very picky over food has been nibbling at it too (he won't eat alot of dry food) and seemed sick. He seems to be getting back to normal now. I cooked a boneless chicken breast, shredded it, and am feeding him that for now.

I can't even begin to describe the feelings of outrage and animosity i have for Wal-mart right now!

My cat died from kidney failure two weeks ago. Now I know why. I was feeding her Special Kitty foil pouches for the last six months as half her diet. I was dealing with the loss and subsequent grief, but now that I know she was murdered, it's like she has died all over again. I never meant to poison my kitty. Why do the press releases only say that 10 cats have died? It's obviously a much larger problem. And why do the press releases focus on the cat food company's potential loss of $26,000,000, instead of the hundreds, maybe thousands of pets which have already died or are going to die soon. Kidney failure is basically irreversible, unless you can afford dialysis or a kidney transplant. Terrorists could not have done a better job at damaging America's psyche! WHAT HAVE THEY DONE?

I took my cat to the vet on March 5th. Diagnosis Kidney Failure. A 6 year old cat. He was Lethargic and not eating. I only fed him Special Kitty cat food in the pouches - sold at Walmart. Any vet would suggest not to change his brand of food. So of course I purposely went back to WalMart and bought him more Special Kitty only. For a couple of weeks all he did was lick the gravy from the pouches, but would no longer eat the food. I would throw out the food after he licked the sauce. After spending 3 days/ 2 nights at the Vets his prognosis was very poor. But I took him home on March 7th - to die. (Or pray for a miracle- as I told the vet I would do) After eliminating this cat food from his diet since March 7th he is again eating and Drinking. I will find out more tomorrow when he returns to the vet for more tests.

We had to put our precious Tiny Tim to sleep last week, before we knew anything about this recall. He would only eat Special Kitty in pouches. The food he loved , killed him. It makes me so mad. You have a pet for so long, take such good care of them and out of no where, he is gone. Who is responsible, Menu Food or Wal-mart? At this point, does it matter? They can't bring my Tiny back.

my 5 month old kitten came down sick last month and on february 23 we took him to the vet. he would not eat, was drinking anything he could get into, he was urinating alot, vomiting, would not play, and meowed constantly. we had a whole bunch of test done and the vet asked us what we were feeding jasper. we told him special kitty wet and dry food.he told us to stop it immediately and to change his food to science diet dry food. the next day the tests came in and the vet called us at 8:00 in the morning jasper was in complete acute renal failure. he said he had never seen levels so high in a kitten before. he kept asking us if jasper could of got ahold of any antifreeze and we said no. he said we could bring jasper down to the office he didn't see jasper living more than 72 hours and treatment would be very expensive and that jasper would still die.we cried for so long. see you don't understand we live in an appartment building and for 8 years we had been asking landlord for a cat. they finally agreed. and we get this kitten that we truely love and spoil and now was going to die.well the vet office is closed on sundays and they check on the pets on and off during the day, but we didn't want him to suffer alone. we were the only ones he knew. so we kept him home with us. the next 72 hours i searched all over the internet and fould recipes for cats with kidney failure. imade up a bunch of food for jasper and had to spoon feed him with a baby spoon to get him to eat. we even went out and bought him a pet water fountain purifier so we new he was getting the best water. ( wanted him to have the best for the little time he had left.) well i'm happy to say jasper has gained weight and is eating again and playing. seems almost to be to himself. the vets are amased when i called them to tell them. jasper is going back to the vets on april 3rd for another round of blood tests. (since he had so much blood taken the first time and was so sick they said we should wait a month to recheck him and see what they show.) he told us would have to see how much damage was done to his kidneys that it is irreversible. i am so mad at walmart and the cat food people. who is going to help us with all the vet bills to keep our pets alive. do you really think we will ever see a penny from them. i think not.

By the way the symptoms the affected animals are experiencing are the exact symptoms of anti-freeze poisoning. Anti-freeze is extremely appetizing to animals. The manufacturer “Menu Foods” has been suspiciously quiet about what exactly is the problem… Could Menu Foods be using ethylene glycol or propylene glycol (less but still toxic) as an appetizer (e.g. secret ingredient)?

My cats on her way to the vet right now, (not eating, drinking alot, throwing up)

riffraffmom  says:

i pray for the best for your cat. sounds alot like the symptoms my cat had. please let us know what the vet said. when the vet asked about anti-freeze last month we called walmart and asked them if their cat food could of been exposed to a botle of leaking anti-freeze and they acted like we were nuts. i figured it was possible to happen with everything being shipped in the same trucks or an accidental spillage in receiving. my cat is a house cat. all chemicals are locked up in the cellar in a cabinet. only way into the cellar is through the outside of the building. when say all chemicals i mean all chemicals right down to extra dish soap. finally got through to people at menu. was telling them about jasper and what happened last month. told them i still had some of the food. they had me read off the back of the packages and they said it wasn't the food being recalled. i tried to explain to them that i had been feeding jasper special kitty since i got him at 8 weeks old on halloween. she told me that someone will get back to me and hung up. that was at 10:30 this morning still waiting for phone call. (doubt if that will happen)

I have fed my cat Prozac (Prozie for short) the exact Special Kitty food in the recall for about a year. She stopped eating this food about a week ago (would only lick the gravy) and had started to lose weight. I was not overly concerned as she was still VERY active and well in all other regards. I just switched her food just before the recall. She is now eating this new food like a horse. For 3 days now I can not seem to feed her enough. When I think how close it was I want to cry. When I hear about others who were not so lucky I do cry. Prozie is a valued member of our family and like a child to us. It feels like someone has tried to murder her and DID murder others. MANY OTHERS!! NOT 10!! Tell the truth and own up to the damage. Money can not measure the loss of a family member.

I've been feeding my cats Special Kitty dry food for years without a problem [or so I thought].

Cats DO vomit on occasion if they have an upset tummy and I've steered away from the green bag since it contains dye and not only stains the carpet, but I'm sure is harmful to cats. So far, my cats are not sick but I'm going to switch brands to be on the safe side.

3 years ago I took my cat Felix to the vet with kidney failure and, with the recall going on now, I'm wondering if anyone knows about a recall from that time period. It was a very costly and heartbreaking event and I'm hoping that I don't have to go through it again.

Thanks, everyone, for posting your comments, stories, and thoughts. Every little bit of information helps.

I contacted Menu Food on Saturday about our Tiny having to be put to sleep after the vet told us we could not save him. I informed them of the type of food I fed him and they told me it sounded like we were affected. The lady took all our info and said we would be hearing from someone from the company very shortly, of course we havent as of yet. I am sure they are afraid of a class action law suit as they should be!!!! Pets are not just animals, they are a part of a family! We trust these companies to provide food for our pets thats safe. They make millions off of all of us. They better have some answers soon! My heart goes out to all of you who have lost a pet ( family member) because of this. Its heart wrenching to have them healthy one minute and gone the next. And anyone who has ever took that long trip to the vets to have have an animal euthenized, knowing the guilt you feel, the pain of not being able to do anything, and knowing on the trip home he will be laying beside you in a box, has my most heart felt sympathy. Then to find out what caused it? Pisses me off! Bunny774@aol.com

#22 Margie - #22 above.

I just returned from the vet . My cat , "RumTum" who was near death on March 7th is now fine. He was in Kidney Failure. The vet called him a "miracle" cat today. His kidneys are back to normal. She originally thought he had consumed something toxic. She thought it could have been anti-freeze also. But said if it was antifreeze he drank, the kidney damage would have been irreversable. So it couldn't have been. I then told her I had stopped feeding him the Special Kitty cat food since he returned home on March 7th. He began to eat and drink again. - This cat food was recalled yesterday.

My 7 year old Abyssinian also ate ONLY Special Kitty. Suddenly last month she started drinking a lot of water. I took her to the vet and the blood tests showed early kidney disease. I'm finding a lot of comfort here in all the reports of cats getting better. BTW, problems with cat food need to be reported to the FDA. When I reported our info, the very nice lady said, "I can't tell you anything right now, but you should know that your cat is one of the lucky ones." It sounds like there are a LOT of animals affected. Keep all your records, I'm hoping my vet bills will be reimbursed - but I'm sure it will take a class action suit to get that.

Our cat liked the Special Kitty pouch foods, which he ate for about two years. Quite suddenly, he became very sick. Stopped eating, drank lots of water (very unusual for him), eyes became watery and threw up a lot.

By chance, he had been to the vet just 2 weeks before this started for an annual checkup, at which time we were told he was healthy. When he suddenly became sick we took him back to the vet he was diagnosed with kidney failure. Having our healthy cat become sick so quickly surprised the vet. Given but maybe a week to live in agonizing pain, sadly, it became his last day.

Now, just 3 weeks later, we hear of the Special Kitty food recall and the symptoms it causes – just like our cat showed. However, without some of the Special Kitty food pouches around to check it becomes impossible to prove a connection. While there would be some relief in knowing why the cat faded away so suddenly, we can’t know for sure if this is the case. It seems quite possible.

My 3 year old cat fell severly sick about a week ago with renal failure. He ate Special Kitty Walmart Brand. My vet recommended the IV for a few days but due to his condition I didn't think it would do much good. Was about to put him down. Took him to a holistic vet in my area and am amaized at his progress. She gave him a homopathic medicine (lycopoduim) as well as recommended 2cc. aloe vera gel (lily of the dessert only) 2X a day. Plus only wet canned cat food without any grains. Not sure of his eventual prognosis but today he brought me not one but two lizards. Don't give up too soon.

First I want to express condolences to everyone who has lost a pet from special kitty or a menu foods product. Second I want to thank everyone on this site for possibly helping to save my cat (still waiting to see is she recovers).

2 days ago I came to this site looking for answers, I found lots of testimonials about sick and dying pets. I called my wife and told her it’s worse than we thought and to take the cat to the Vet. immediately. He was suspect because of the symptoms (listless, drinking and peeing a lot) so he pulled blood work. The blood work showed some kidney damage (by the enzymes the kidneys were spilling into the blood. He said that typically these enzymes don’t show up until about 75% kidney failure has occurred, so he anticipated Felix (my cat) had suffered at least that much damage. He also said that there are 2 types of kidney damage chronic (happens over many years and isn’t reversible) and acute (from a toxic insult) there has been some success in reversing some of the damage of the acute type if it treated soon enough). If you think you dog or cat is not behaving normal take it to your vet! If your vet doesn’t take this seriously enough take you pet to another vet! This is much more wide spread than the new is letting on, thousands of animals may die from this before they know why.Stop feeding the possible food immediately!Freeze the open pouches or cans and hold onto the unopened food!Veterinarians and the FDA are collecting samples of food from their affected patients. Last word of advice, don’t be angry at Wal-Mart, Eukanuba, Iams etc. none of them whished or wanted something like this to happen. Menu Foods is another story, we can be angry with them!

I had a Cat named Rocky, he lived 24 years on dry cat food. He died on Thanksgiving day when I gave him a can of Turkey & Gravy (canned) in 2002. My heart is breaking as I read these stories. First of all, good luck to everyone who has animals who are suffering and my thoughts are with everyone who is affected. My 10-month old cat Jade is at the vet today, Thursday, March 22. He is receiving intravenous treatment in an effort to reverse or repair damage that has been done, but my vet says there are no guarantees at this point. I know the exact kidney value readings because I asked the vet for a copy so that I could do some research myself. From what I've been reading, he is in terrible condition. He has been eating special kitty since we got him when he was 4 months old. By the way, I am angry at Walmart for not posting a sign that the product was recalled and why. They simply took product off the shelf. I went to purchase more and assumed that they were out, but I had a stockpile at home, about 15 packs left. After comparison to the recalled list, all of my packets had the exp. date and exact flavor as "infected" products. I retrieved 8 packets from my garbage can. They are now in my refrigerator as "proof" along with pictures on my camera I took several months ago of Jade begging for his food (before it was tainted I suppose). That is what breaks my heart the most, I FED him POISON. He started acting lethargic and thirsty about 2 weeks ago. He followed me around the house and wanted to lay on me all the time. He was "asking" for help and I was foolish and didn't listen and never thought it could be the food. Like others have said on here, he continued to lick the gravy and not eat the food. Lots of times I would scrape the dried chunks into the garbage after returning home from work. What is going on with this gravy? Was it some special ingredient or were the chunks unappealing to the cat? I am now getting more suspicious of the company and what exactly was in this food. Was this some kind of experiment at the cost of consumers and the lives of their pets? If anyone has exact readings before and after any kind of treatment or any good news, please post them here. Unfortunately, I keep finding bad news, and I need some good news in order to have some hope for Jade, thanks, Deb in Pennsylvania

Debra , Rum Tums BUN was 80 and creat 7.1 before Iv fluids-Antibiotics and taking him off Special Kitty Pouch Cat food (off that cat food for 17 days now) - It returned to BUN 35 and Creat 1.9 His vet did not expect him to make it a week. They suggested I put him down. He ate a lot of that food in the pouches. He does get tired more easily right now but he went through a lot. He is pretty much back to his old self. Good luck with your Jade.

Margie, thanks for the reply. I will post results of Jade's bloodwork tomorrow after 2 days of IV treatment/anti-biotics. Jade is only 10 months old so hopefully he has many more years ahead of him, and you've given me a bit a hope, and rest tonight. Best of luck with RumTum and please keep me posted as to his condition. Deb in Pennsylvania

I also heard back from the FDA, they want to test the food I have here to see what is in it. They are trying hard to get to the bottom of this. I urge people. DO NOT buy any items made by Menu Food, even the dry food, we have given these people enough of our money. They dont care about people or animals only the money. If you think they care about animals then check out PETAs website on how menu foods keep their 40-50 animals they have there for testing. The vidoe is gut wrenching!! We had to put our cat to sleep because of being poisoned by menu foods. Anyone know a good lawyer?

The only special kitty that has been recalled has all been in pouches. I am still feeding my cats the beef and gravy and chicken gravy in the cans. They have not shown any signs of being sick. I hope that this continues to be true. I am still concerned that these may still be recalled at a future date.

Just an update on Jade for anyone is reading these...after 48 hours of IV treatments....BUN started at >130 and is at 95. Creatine started at 13.6 is now at 9.5. Still not in the normal range but he is improving and still at vet getting treatments.

Someone from the FDA called me today for more information, so it seems they are doing their part. I read on website http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=2975912&page that company is going to pay medical bills if you can prove pet died from tainted food. In other words, keep all packages & receipts just in case the company does agree to pay....Deb in Pennsylvania (original post #45)

Our little loved ones only have us to stand up for them and their rights. So menu Foods get your crap together and at the very least start compensating these poor familys who loved ones they have lost or been sick with their vet bills it is just a small price to pay considering what they have lost and is going through you dirty murderers

I had to put my cat to sleep in January. Special Kitty was the only food she ever ate. She would of been 12 years old in May. I miss her so much and I don't know who to contact. The phone number Walmart gave me know one answers or the phone is always busy. I to feel like I poisoned my cat. Not a day goes by that I don't think of her. If you know how I can contact some one please let me know. It was hard to put her to sleep but she had all of the syptoms. But I didn't know about this until now and neither did my Vet. Now I feel even worse because of what I fed her.

I would also suggest that you throw away or save any plastic bowls/dishes you used to serve this tainted food in. My cat will not eat anything from these plastic bowls/dishes anymore. ???? When I put the same new food on the floor or in a clean glass dish - he will.????? Is the smell still there in these plastic ones?

my healthy 17lb. cat suffered because of contaminated food she held on for a week but we couldn't stand to see her suffer any longer. she weighed only 10lbs. when she died and was dripping blood from the mouth. the vet said the cat had been poisioned resulting in kidney failure. I have one other cat and we are in nthe process of building our home it seemed it could be anything. the other cat is fine i had no answers for a week. I have spoke an attorney and he thinks because i had a toxicology screening and the cat was healthy i have a case. someone needs to pay for what has happened

Does anyone happen to know if this goes away, if you stop feeding them a recalled item and will they get better with time? My cats have always eaten Meow Mix Dry bur I wanted to TREAT (yeah right) them and I fed my 2 cats special kitty in the pouch, for about 2 months in Nov. and Dec. I split a pouch between them, maybe twice a week. I do remember Ozzi throwing up once and I remember them not eating the meat, just the gravy. My husband got mad and said they weren't going to eat the dry food, if I kept giving them the packets, so I stopped for a while....LUCKILY!!!

I hope I didn't damage them

My cat has never been sick EVER and I've had her for 7mos. The reason I got her is because I had a miscarriage of my twin boys last year and Aug. and I got the kitten to take my mind off of what happened and for this to happen to another loved one of mine makes me SICK.I want in on the lawsuit! Please contact me Prestige334@hotmail.com

Comment for Tracy Fair,

If your cat has any of the known symptoms, I would contact the vet right away. I missed Jade's first signs of being ill, and I regret it every moment now. When I first took Jade to the vet, I told him I had read somewhere that it can go away if the food is no longer being fed. My vet said not true. If damage occured to the kidneys, it's not just simply going to go away, but it was up to me how much I was willing to invest. That was before the blood test. As soon as I got the results from the test, I started treatment right away, his readings were awful...but Jade ate 2 to 3 packs a day. I knew immediately on Tuesday when I heard about the recall that something was wrong with Jade, and blame myself everyday for not catching it sooner. Everyone knows their cat better than any vet, watch for changes...Deb in Pennsylvania.

Margie  says:

Comment for Deb #65. Just read your comment. None of us knew it was the food itself that was making our pets sick. How could we have known. We shouldn't blame ourselves. I myself didn't rush to the vet with RumTum when he wouldn't eat. Rum Tum seems good. But maybe he will have some damage over the years. I don't know. I'll have to talk more with his vet . He goes back in 3 weeks. I'll pray for Jade.

Our kitty of 11 years dies from kidney failure in January. We never even knew of the recall. I buy special kitty every week for her & never even knew there was a problem. If I had known I never would have feed her tha food. We took her to the vet & was given no hope. We chose to bring her home to pass away in our care. It was a very painfull death & I just wish I had known. We wil be filling with the lawsuit. I will also take back the food I just bought for the daugter of miss kitty before it is to late for her as well. I notice yesterday she has blood in her stool. It just makes you want to cry I know you fed her this poisen. If only we had known seems to be the point of all these deaths. Our hearts go out to all the love ones who have been taken so suppenly & for no reason.

Comment for Kim #67....Do you have receipts for the food you purchased? Hold onto any proof you may have...my vet said keep the food, DONT use it of course, but keep it as proof. I'm not a lawyer, but if we are going to get re-imbursement for our medical expenses, I think the company is going to want proof that is what you fed your cats. And so far from what I've read, Menu foods is willing to pay.

I took her to a vet on Saturday, March 24.. I rec'vd the results Sunday that she has kidney failure.. not much we can do for her given her age...I am holdiong in my hand one of the pouches that has the recall #... granted she is 14 but according to the vet she was in good condition considering the kidney failure.. it is a matter of time or I may need to do what is best for her..it id very disheartening to know by the hands of the person that loved her the most was the person that sealed her fate....

Tracy,

Our vet has been charging around $45 just for the blood test.

Our kitty is still getting fluids and will hopefully be coming home soon. He is improving but his BUN (69) and CRE (9.6) is still higher than what the vet would like to see. Those levels are down substantially from when he went in 5 days ago.

My poor kitty, she hasn't moved all day. I brought her up from downstairs and tried to make her eat. She ate a few bites and then went outside. I didn't see her in a while and my husband went and looked around and found her lying out in the yard. She came in and slooooowly walked to the stairs to go back down and couldn't even get down the stairs. Just yesterday, she was running and chasing Ozzi, my other cat all over the yard. I hope she makes it until tomorrow morning. I'm spending my gas and electric money, to take her, hopefully I won't need to spend the mortgage money for the rest, if this is her problem.

Just a quick opionion, seems to me Menu Foods is willing to pay us some money, shut us up about the situation, move on and continue business as usual. NOT GOOD ENOUGH. I spend hours on the computer looking for answers. I'm not satisfied with the report of what happened. I want to know how this "COULD HAVE" HAPPENED. Someone screwed up, WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, HOW, WHY? Unfortunately, like many things in life, I took for granted...my pet's food was safe. Something needs to change. If anyone can tell me where I can find information on the plants that manufacture these types of foods, I would appreciate some websites. I don't want to put MENU FOODS out of business, they're going to have to pay our medical bills, right? BUT something needs to change.

I just first want to tell you all that there's an update on all of this, it is now saying it was not rat poison, but a chemical made for plastics. They have also added 2 DRY foods to the recall list. Go here: http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/03/30/pet.food.recall.a I have fed my cats Special Kitty DRY cat food for years, and they seem to be fine. They will not eat the regular kind, only the kind in the green bag though. They turn their noses up at the regular colored one. I am worried that this recall might include the Special Kitty Dry food also, so if anyone hears anything PLEASE email me! winter@hickoryridgechurch.com Purina is among the list too, but only for one specific pouch style wet food for dogs. Purina says that NOTHING else, including their wet cat food, is packaged by Menu Foods. The reason most of the companies use Menu Foods is to package the wet food, because they don't have room at the facilities here in the U.S. Someone needs to pay for this, and I am praying for all of you & your pets! God Bless!

I've been feeding my 3 cats Special Kitty DRY FOOD for over seven years now. Today I to Roxie to the vet along with her new kittens for a check up. Turns out she is in the beginning stages of renal failure. Her blood levels were through the roop. Normal range for the particular test ranges between 10 and 12 but hers registered at 40+. Antibotics were prescribed and I've got to take her back in two weeks to see if she responds. I'm angry and outraged! I have 6 cats. Three of which are still nursing from their sick mother. My two other cats ate the same thing. I take them in on Monday. We all know they are probably poisoned as well. Why did this and why? Dont they check these foods monthly for gods sake.

I've been reading the contents on the bags...Since wheat gluten was the original source of contamination when this whole mess started, I've been telling my friends not to even buy a product if it says "WHEAT GLUTEN" on the package. From what I've read, Menu Foods and other companies who used a certain supplier from China are the companies who started recalling the products made from that wheat imported from that supplier....Who knows the real story, and how long before any other company is willing to come out and announce a recall. Menu Foods got complaints back in January and didn't come forward and recall until the middle of March. In my opinion, if a cat is puking, something is making it sick, and maybe a change in diet is needed...Deb in PA

You have to wonder why the recall has been changed back to Nov 8,2006 when the following is shown on ChemNutra's site about it's import of wheat gluten from the plant in China. To me it looks like there are lot numbers dating back to Oct 6, 2006 (20061006.)

CHEMNUTRA ANNOUNCES

NATIONWIDE WHEAT GLUTEN RECALL

Las Vegas, NV… April 3, 2007… ChemNutra Inc., of Las Vegas, Nevada, yesterday recalled all wheat gluten it had imported from one of its three Chinese wheat gluten suppliers – Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. Ltd.

The wheat gluten ChemNutra recalled was all shipped from China in 25 kg. paper bags, and distributed to customers in the same unopened bags. The bags were all labeled "Wheat Gluten Batch No.: _______ Net Weight: 25 kg Gross Weight: 25.1 kg Made in China". The batch numbers included in the recall are 20061006, 20061027, 20061101, 20061108, 20061122, 20061126, 20061201, 20061202, 20061203, 20061204, 20061205, 20061206, 20061208, 20061221, 20070106, 20070111, 20070116, and 20070126.

I would NOT take a chance. Check for wheat gluten as ingredient. If present, DO NOT feed it to your cat. If you already have, save the containers and food as evidence and monitor your cat for symptoms. I sure as &#%$ hope WalMart has taken all the affected products off its shelf! DO NOT TRUST THEM.

This weekend my wife's favorite cat, Brownie, a long-haired black cat died. He became suddenly ill Sunday, went into convulsions and died. We had been feeding him and our other cats with Gourmet Blend from Wal-Mart. Our family vet thought that this could be just a bladder infection gone bad. The vet we talked to on the phone the night Brownie died thought he died from eating or drinking something poisonous. I hope we didn't cause his death with using dry cat food we thought was sake.

I have a 6 month old male persian. He has always eaten Iams kitten canned and dry. Recently, I changed his food to Special Kitty dry food. He has also had Whiskas in the pouch, but he only had 2. I checked and it was not on the recall list and doesn't contain Wheat Gluten. Now, I have noticed him having diarreah, which I thought was normal for a sudden change of food. He is getting it stuck in his fur and making a huge mess. Now he has some blood in his stool. This worries me a little. It probably is not related to the recall, but it is related to Special Kitty. He seems ok other than the blood in the stool. However I have only noticed it once. I don't have $ to take him to the vet. He is very special to me. I am not sure what to do. It seems to me that if a healthy cat on Iams gets bloody diarreah after changing food to Special Kitty, it has to be the food. My cat has always been healty. Btw...I have 2 persians. The other one seems ok. They are both inside cats. So I am not sure what the cause is.

Grains in the food. The grains are toxic to dogs and cats. Don't feed Corn, Wheat, Soy, or this new rice protein stuff. Stay away from Animal Digest (manure).

What is the best food to use that does not contain the "bad" things? I look at the ingrediants everytime I buy cat food, and they are all typically the same. Corn is usually the second or third ingrediant. I was trying to avoid corn since it is just a filler. Now I am learning more about what is used in these pet foods and it is horrible. i don't want to feed my cats Animal Digest....GROSS!!!!! So what foods don't use that?

Regarding a comment above by Lisa K Feldman, I am certain that Doan Pet Care (http://www.doanepetcare.com/) makes all or most of the dry food marketed by Wal-Mart under the Special Kitty brand name. It really troubles me that it is so difficult to find out who actually manufactures Special Kitty (and others probably) pet food. The way I figured it out is posted in answer to a question someone asked about who manufactures Special Kitty dry kitten food here: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_company_manufacture

My cat is very sick from eating Special Kitty cat food in the 5.5oz. can. She`s been missing for three weeks after eating this cat food. Today we found her weak, very thin, lethargic,no apetite, drinks only water, & has diarrhea. She was out in the barn, too weak to get to the house, where she is most used to being. Our family suffers to see our beloved pet in such a state. The manufacturers must be brought to some justice for their negligence.I`m very scared she won`t live to see the Vet. in the morning. I bought this cat food at WalMart. My heart aches for all the animals that have suffered through this & their owners. This makes me mad!!!

Yesterday eight weaned kittens living at my house died. A couple of days before I noticed one was retching and thought is was just a hairball. Yesterday after work i found one dead and the other are not around. I think they are under the house.

I also noticed with the last bag that they were reluctant to eat the food.

Your contamination problem may be back.

don't worry about the kitties - they were half wild, not pets at all.. Kinda sad but I wanted you to know about the situation.

Michael,

The problem has never left. Wal Mart has pulled some of the food, recoded it and put the junk back on the shelf to sell again. The same stuff that was in the recall. I am sorry about your kittens and the thousands of other cats lost at the hands of "Special Kitty".

Hi everyone....In a sense I don't think it's necessarly the Special Kitty food that could be making your beloved pets ill. My mother-in-law has been feeding her kitties for years with that food and has yet to have a problem with it. I even feed my special boy that food as well and he has shown no signs of problem, I also feed him tuna as a treat...I am sincerely sorry for those who lost their "babies"...I wouldn't know what I would do if I lost mine...I mean if one day my boy becomes sick due to the special kitty then indeed I will be suing the company that makes it cause there should be no need of animals passing away. But since I have seen no proof of any of my families or friends animals getting ill or dying, I can't really say to ban your animal from that food. It's your decision and I'm thankful to know there are people out there that express concern and is willing to warn anyone out there who will listen...Just be sure that it's what it is....Bye...

Vanessa,

Bless your heart. Wal-Mart and the Special Kitty folks do a "killer" buisness with consumers like you and your Mother-In-Law. I suppose unsuspecting consumers is the reason Wal-Mart covered the UPC code on the tainted food they sell and put the bad product right back on the shelf. Heck, who would ever know the difference if their very own cat hasn't died yet, right?

Sorry Vanessa,

I can't back your thoughts.

Your Special Kitty Extra Stength Odour Control should be reviewed by your product quality control. (This is the 39.7Kg box). The last three boxes including the present one have had the inside plastic bag pulled down so far that there is about 2-1/2 inches of the litter that falls out of the box upon opening. Surely something can be done about the waste to the consumer.

Hello, I have fourty-two spay and nuetered cats that range in ages, the oldest being twelve years old "; my, Whoo Berry ";. I have been noticing, since I started adding a bag of Special Kitty a week along with two bags of Purina cat chow, that when I feed them the Special Kitty, some of my cats vomit it back up after about twenty minutes to near an hour, and it has been happening every time I feed them the bag of special kitty, not the Purina Cat Chow. Today is 3-20-08 and I will not buy it any longer. I put into my search engine...Cats vomiting on Special Kitty cat food and it showed my this web sight. I know something is wrong with this food. I wish that I could afford to have it analyzed by an independent company to see what is wrong with it. What is this world coming to...If we can't trust our animals food, My God, what about ours. We use some of those ingredients in the foods that we eat. I am very concerned and wish I could find out what is going on with Wal Marts' Special Kitty...Wal Mart needs to step forward and stop selling this Killer Food. If Sam was still alive I bet he would do more than what is being done now...Like Nothing. Thanks, Shelley

It is the grains in the pet foods which are making your cats sick. No corn, wheat or soy!

Thanks for giving me the information on the different types of meals that can make my cats sick. Do you have any suggestions on what would be a safe " groovy " type of cat food or home made chow that would be healthy for my crew to eat. I spend around thirty-eight dollars a week on food to feed my cats. I thought of maybe cooking chicken and rice, tuna and green beans and rice....You know just the kinds of stuff they like, along with a good dry food. Lordy, I never thought that I would be worried about what my cats can eat that is safe and healthy. I guess that I have been foolish to just assume that the cat food manufacturers that makes the food that I feed my cats, would actually care about what my furry friends eat; It's all about the " all mighty dollar " to them. Thanks again Susan.

What do you think about Purina Cat food? They seem okay with it, or are they?

Susan, I found the link to rating cat foods.....Lord Have Mercy.. I'm going to start cooking my animals food. I will figure this out one way or another. I know they will need some type of dry food and I can't possibly feed the crew I have the expensive stuff, but I will try to get a better grade of dry food than what I have been getting, and maybe along with some good home cooking that is nutritious I might be able to help them live a long time, plus stop giving those evil people my money for their un-eatable food.

Thanks for your time.......

Shelly,

This pet food thing is so awful. I've been having to cook for my pets, too. Seems every food I try turns out to be bad even though the ingredients do not list the bad stuff included in the mix.

Good luck!

Hi, Susan! I tried to become a member, but I could not get the squiggly letters to go through. I enabled my cookies and still could not get through. I have a five year old computer and still using windows 98.

I started cooking my animals their groovy food, full of fish and vegetables with rice. I still am using a dry food, Purina cat chow, but I feel better now that I know that they are getting vitamines and omega 3 fats. I'm cutting back on the dry food.

I appreciate you writing me back and trying to help me. What kind of animals do you have? Maybe you can give me a helpful hint on how to become a member with using my dinosaur of a computer. Thanks, Susan

Shelley,

Contact Hub Pages at http://hubpages.com/email/help/ they will help you to get set up.

You need to get your cats off the Cat Chow it will kill them! No corn, wheat, or soy of any kind can be fed to a cat or dog.

I have a couple of cats and dog. I've had nearly every kind of animal you could imagine in my life time. I'm a softy and try to help lots of wild animals.

What I cannot get, why would you feed your lovable pets the cheapest food on the market and then complain? Why would you feed VERY EXPENSIVE Savannah cat food from the Wal Mart?

It'd take you less than an hour to check on-line reviews and forums, and forget forever about Whiskas, Friskas etc. Use Royal Canin, Hills, Iams, Eucanuba: your animal would stay happy, and you save on vet bills.

Does Walmart sell dry catfood in bags over 18 pounds? I can't find bigger bags. I thought I could save money if I bought big bags for my 4 outdoors cats.

Thanks, Marcia

Just reviewing these posts from so long ago still makes me want to cry. It has been almost 2 years since my cat Jade was sick, but he made it through that tough time. He still has to go to the vet for routine bloodwork. He is on a special formula for cats with kidney disease. My vet and I tried two times to get him back on a regular food diet, but his kidney values went beyond normal so I have to pay more for the special diet for the rest of his life. Other than that, Jade is doing well.
