Speed Reading 101

Learn to Read Faster and Understand More
Did you know that you would actually comprehend more of the text the faster you read? You thought it was the other way around, didn't you? I know I did. Until I learned speed reading.
Actually, I cheated ;-) I bought an audio-course, but a few things had already pointed me in the right direction:
- I could use my fingers and hands to force my eyes to read faster.
- By forcing my eyes to read faster than I thought possible, I actually did read faster and understood what I read.
You know how small children read? They put their index finger in the book and points to each word, as they say it out aloud. This is actually a good habit. Not saying the word out aloud, but using your finger to force your eyes to follow. Your fingers are faster than your eyes want to be. Train yourself to go faster and faster, and you'll be amazed of how much you understand, although you are reading much faster than usual.
Don't say each word out aloud in your head. This will slow you down! Get out of the habit. Again you can help yourself by forcing your eyes forward with your index finger.
Of course, there's a lot more to speed reading than these small steps, but it gets you going in the right direction.

Gary, your comments are fair, but you work from your system...
The system provided by Britt ALSO works. In fact, I can vouch for it being effective, so all is a matter of choice. As in all areas of life, you should choose what fits you best. :-)

By using your finger to read, you're breaking one of the major barriers to reading quickly - subvocalization - which is reading "aloud" in your head or with your lips while you read. The finger movement is forcing you to think in terms of complete thoughts instead of individual words, so you have to stop less.
