A spiral staircase is not only functional but it also adds interest to any room. However, most people find it difficult to construct a spiral staircase from scratch because of its rounded shape. Compared to a regular staircase, spiral staircase is more difficult to build. Fortunately, many home improvement companies sell spiral staircase kits.

Spiral staircase kits are used for building a staircase with easy-to-follow steps. You need to use one of these if you do not want to spend too much time constructing a spiral staircase. This is also ideal for those who have no carpentry skills because it is very easy to install. And if you do not want to experience the hassle of preparing materials for a spiral staircase project, then get yourself one of these kits.

You can buy spiral staircase kits from different websites such as http://www.theironshop.com/ or http://www.arkestairs.com/. You can also get them from several home improvement shops. Once you have bought a kit for building a spiral staircase, here are the things that you need to do:

  • Measure the height of the staircase from the bottom floor to the upper floor. You do not want a staircase which is too high or too short.
  • Determine how many risers and treads you will have. The number of risers should be the same as the number of treads, including the landing. You should also measure the height of the riser or the height between two treads by dividing the total height between the upper and lower floors by the number of risers.
  • In constructing a spiral staircase, you should start from the bottom. Determine the area where you want to put the landing. It is usually attached to a wall. You should also locate the point where you will place the center post.
  • The kit includes all necessary materials to secure the different parts of the spiral staircase like nuts and bolts. Use these supplies to secure the landing on the desired location.
  • For the center post, there should be an extra person who will help you hold it in place while you lower the treads one by one from the top part of the post to the lower part.
  • The next step is to secure the upper landing by using screw brackets.
  • Go back to the treads and arrange them in such a way that they resemble spiral staircase steps. One end of the treads should be overlapping while the other end should overlap the next tread by about 2 to 3 inches to make room for the risers.
  • Install the risers provided by the spiral staircase kit. Once you have installed the treads and risers properly, you can proceed to the installation of hand rail. Make sure that everything is tightly secured.

Using a spiral staircase kit makes the job a lot easier and faster—you can finish doing this after an hour or so. Just make sure that another person will help you do it. Always remember that you should secure all parts tightly to avoid accidents. And follow the instructions that are usually included in the kit to a tee. Do not skip one step unless you want you spiral staircase to collapse.
