Journey from Winter to Spring in Stockholm

Stockholm a Journey from Winter to Spring
I arrived in Stockholm in middle of winter for a short stay of 4-5 months. In India in Bangalore even when it is full winter we are never in need of very thick woolen clothes and the winter also has sun for around 12 hrs.But here I land in a place where the sun rises at 10 and then sets at 3 and never throughout that period it was as bright as India. It was dark always and I felt so lonely and depressed. But then as 2-3 days passed I realized there are things to enjoy in winter here that I will never be able to see in Bangalore..like the snowfall, frozen lakes etc.It was white everywhere, trees were covered in snow,I started enjoying all these. The temperature was ranging between 0 to -10 during the days and dipping further in the nights, something which I had never experienced before. The good thing was all the malls, offices and my room were very comfortable(read Warm).Slowly as time went by days started getting longer and now when I was returning from office there was a faint and fading light. We had the occasional snowfall but then the sun was also getting brighter.I was told by my Swedish friends that spring is round the corner and it will be really nice. The trees will be green and we will have different kind of flowers.I was just awaiting to see this change of seasons. In Bangalore I never could mark such a change because the trees retained their leaves and the change in temperature even though could be marked was not significant.I noticed that by the time we reached end of February some of the trees that did not have a single sign of life were suddenly having some tiny spores which were small leaves. It took another 10-15 days for the leaves to become visible and suddenly we the texture of nature had changed from white to green. It seemed someone had thrown a green paint on some white background.I was really thrilled by the thought that I will now see many flowers that I had earlier seen only in movies like the tulips. But the first one to blossom was the japanese cheery tree in front of my window. The tree which was had only branches till now had turned to a big pink flower, with the flower fully covering all the branches.I had never seen a Japanese cherry tree before and was amazed how the tree changed from one season to another.Someone informed me that I should go to Kungstragarden where these trees are in a sequence and the flowers are in full blossom.I managed to do that a week later an just praying god that flowers should still be there as I had heard that the flowers make way for leaves very soon. But I really thanked god when I saw that the flowers were still there and there were some people who were shaking the trees and the petals from the flower came down as if there was a pink rain.I tried that too as I had seen the sight in lot of our bollywood movies where the actress has a kind of shower of flowers,I experienced that first time and I thank god that I could see such beautiful things in my life.Slowly all other flowers also started coming up.The ground near my home had turned white but this time it was not the snow,it was because of the uncountable number of flowers that had popped up from the green grass. You walk a bit around the city and you can see all the city painted in all kind of flowers. You had red, yellow, white, pink etc tulips and there were dozens of other varieties of flowers. It had started getting warmer now and it was more like an Indian winter and I was very comfortable and the sight of all these beautiful flowers had captured my imagination.I also went around the Stockholm archipelago and took the cruise trip to Finland and Estonia. The archipelago was particularly very bright and refreshing in the spring/summer.As the summer came near,it seemed even the people became more lively and there were smiling.lovely.enjoying people everywhere.Everything had changed from the dark days in winter to days now when the sun almost never sets. There is light for around 18 hours now and that cheers up everyone including me.I will go back to India in sometime, but in my heart and my memory will always have these pictures of journey from one season to another. My heart will always remain filled with the colours of Stockholm in spring.
