During a time where newspapers are falling all around the country, a surprising name from the past has risen in St. Louis news.
Starting December 8th, 2009, the St. Louis Globe-Democrat will return to the St. Louis market providing news and information from around the St. Louis area. The "paper" will be entirely online based, cutting out a huge amount of costs that print newspapers are facing.
The Globe-Democrat has a long and storied history in the St. Louis area, dating back 1852. It's coverage spanned 134 years, before coming to an end roughly 23 years ago.The Globe-Democrat has covered six American wars, and now will return at the end of 2009 to provide analysis and conversation for the St. Louis community.
This is a major story since it is such an optimistic and large sized project occuring in a fairly large market. While no physical papers will be printed, it will be very interesting to see if 1) The Globe-Democrat is able to get a foothold and a following and 2) How the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reacts to the return of the Globe-Democrat online.
The Globe-Democrat plans utilize all electronic formats and be the number one digital source of news in the St. Louis area. The Post runs the website StlToday.com, a major hub for St. Louis news, but has not fully embraced the asthetics of the technology currently available.
As major newspapers scale back and fold across the country, one is reinventing itself and set to debut once more in the St. Louis area. Will it be able to bite a chunk out of the stranglehold the Post enjoys? Only time will tell. One thing is certain - some competition can only be a good thing in a one newspaper town.

I am sure there is a market for. Even if there isn't, there is a huge need for it. Way too little independent newspapers survive, only the big players survive, and with three players or less on one market there isn't any real competition. A new competitor is always welcome. I hope something like this will be in my neighbourhood, but I am afraid I will have to do it myself if I want to.
