Stain removal is a necessary part of clothing care. Quick and cautious stain removal allows you to keep your clothing in a wearable condition longer; therefore, saving money by reducing long run clothing costs.


To prevent stains from setting in, it is best to treat it as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the fabric. The longer the stain lingers, the more difficult it becomes to remove.

If allowed to go through the wash and then dry cycles, the stain my be set in and it becomes virtually impossible to get out.

Read the clothing care label. Clothing manufacturers are required to attach a “permanent care label” on clothing to indicate the care that is best recommended for the fabric.

Labels may be in attached to the back of the neckline, waistline, or a back or side seam. Be sure to follow these recommendations for the best care and keeping your clothing in the best shape.

Below is a list of common stains and steps to remove them:


Antipersperant / Deodorant

Mix together a table spoon of vinegar with two tablespoons of vinegar. Dip a white cloth into the solution and dab on the stain. Wash the garment as recommended.

Beer

  1. Mix one teaspoon of a mild detergent with a cup of luke-warm water. Blot.
  2. Mix one-third cup of white household vinegar with two-thirds cup of water. Blot.
  3. Sponge with clean water. Blot then launder as recommended.

Blood

Rinse with cold water and pour liquid detergent on the stained area. Let soak then wash as recommended.

Candle Wax / Crayon

Scrape the affected area with a spoon and remove as much of the wax as possible. Place a paper towel under and on top of the area and iron on a low to medium setting. Dampen the area with liquid detergent and let soak. Launder as usual.

Catsup

Blot the area and rinse in cold water. Treat the area with a pre-wash and let soak. Wash as recommended.


Chocolate

Use a pre-wash and rinse in cold water. Wash as recommended.

Coffee

Rinse with cold water and pour liquid detergent on the stained area. Let soak then wash as recommended.

Glue

 Saturate the area with white vinegar and let soak. Wash as usual.

Grass

Treat with hydrogen peroxide and wash separately in cold water.

Grease

Treat the area with baby powder to absorb excess oil. Treat the area with Dawn dishwashing liquid and soak. Launder in cold water.

Gum

Rub the garment with ice and scrape off with a spoon. Repeat until gum is removed. Treat the area with pre-wash then wash as usual.

Ink

Treat the area with hairspray, then pre-wash and let soak. Launder as recommended.

Lipstick

Treat the area with pre-wash and scrub the area with an old clean toothbrush. Wash as recommended.

Mildew

Treat the area with lemon juice and salt or white vinegar and salt. Place the garment in the sun, then wash separately.

Mustard

Rinse in cold water and use white vinegar. Wash as usual.

Red Wine

Dab a little club soda or pour salt on the stain right away.  Wash as recommended.

Rust

Rub lemon juice on the stain and allow it to dry in the sun, then wash separately.

Soft Drinks

Dab area with a clean towel and cold water. Treat with pre-wash and wash as usual.

Urine

Blot the area with a white vinegar and water solution.
