Standard Deviation

Thought I would write a hub on how I learnt standard deviation with some examples, which will hopefully help you understand it a bit better.

Standard deviation or SD for short is utilized to measure dispersion. It gives the researcher an indication as to how far an individual score is, which is scattered or spread around the means.

The means score/value is the most representative score, however, it will not show how or where the other values lie in relation to it.

Standard Deviation tells the researcher:

How much (on average) an individual score is in the set differ from the ‘means'.

It can be calculated by hand but with the invention of computer technology it is a lot easier by computer.

If using a scientific calculator: Switch on

Shift + SCL or ON

Put your numbers in + m+ end with m+

Shift 1 = means

Shift 2 = standard Deviation

Example:

33, 31, 19, 18, 14, 60, 34, 39, 42, 42, 28, 25, 24, 27, 33, 32, 20, 40, 40

X = 31.77

Standard Deviation = 10. 4

An example of Standard Deviation with the Mean, Mode and Median

20, 21, 23, 25, 26, 27, 27, 30, 31, 32, 34, 37, 38, 39, 41, 42, 44, 45, 45, 46, 48,48, 48, 50, 55, 56, 58, 58, 58

Mean = 39.6

Mode = 40

Median = 48, 58

Standard Deviation = 11.49

X = 11.5

this sight doesn't help the least bit. i am trying to learn how to calculate standard deviation and it doesn't say how it just gives u the value.

If an example is going to be given you need all steps in there. I looked at the example and it doesn't tell me how you came up with the answer. For those who have a hard time with trying to understand math need a better break down of how the answer is given.

This is useless. Hilariously so.
