As dusk turned into night, we would go up on the hill and wait for it to get dark. I remember those nights so vividly; we would just lie on our backs in the field and look up into the wide open sky. We were looking at thousands upon thousands of stars and we couldn’t be troubled to even try and count them all. I recall whenever we would see a shooting star; someone would shout out, “That was mine!” Those were wonderful times as a kid and I remember those nights fondly.

Stars captivate our imaginations today as they captivated the imaginations of so many people, throughout history. In the early Greek, Egyptian and Chinese civilizations, stars were an important part of the culture and beliefs of the day. They were used as early means of finding your direction at the seas and some believe were even used to help the Magi from the East find baby Jesus.

Today, stars are one of the most popular things that people find to be of interest. There are those that follow astrology and its uses in the zodiac; even some devote themselves to the continued understanding of the universe through astronomy. Finally, there are also a significant number of people with interest in having stars tattoos on their body.

In recent years, the star tattoo has shared a significant amount of popularity with the butterfly tattoo. Through this Hub I will look at the most popular star tattoos, the significance, the style and who this tattoo would be recommended for.  In the end you might want one or even a wrist tattoo which can be cool too.

Nautical Star Tattoos

Early sailors would use a sextant and the stars as the only way in which they would plot their course through the seas. Thus a great part of the significance behind the Nautical Tattoo emerged; it went beyond just popularity; it represented bravery, strength and the willingness to forge ahead into new waters.

The early explorers found familiarity with these thoughts and therefore they then bore the marking of the star to prove it. The Nautical Tattoo emerged as the star tattoo of choice for those seafarers and has continued on in many military branches.

These type of star tattoos designs are shaped with 5 points, and alternates on each point from a dark to light colors. While you can get this in any color combination the most common color is red with black. It is also often worn on the arm or wrist of the person.

Recommended: Navy seamen, fishermen, and modern day adventurists.

Moon Star Tattoo

This tattoo while very popular doesn’t hold as much deep significance and most of the other popular tattoos of stars. Maybe it is because of the use of the moon and stars together that this type of tattoo holds such interest for some.

Since there isn’t great meaning behind them we can look at the different styles that are popular. This picture shows how the stars and moon have been intertwined with each other to make a very unique tattoo. Allot of times the moon with be accompanied with a single star or might have just three stars near it to create a balanced looking star tattoo.

As this type of star tattoo goes, allot of people have placed this either on the top of their forearm or on the ankle.

Recommended: Young teens or those with interest in fairy tales

Pentagram Tattoo

This type of star tattoo has a variety of interest as the meanings behind why people get it are just as varied. The pentagrams tattoo is a 5 point tattoo that represents earth, air, fire and water; with the 5th point representing the spirit. So the origins of this symbol have had many religious meanings.

The Egyptians would place this marking on the tombstone of the deceased person, as it represented the symbol for the sky and the hereafter. Christians equate this symbol (upright) as representing the 5 wounds that Christ suffered. Finally, Satanists use this symbol (upside down) as a marking in contrast to the Christian faith with the face of Satan or a goat.

Whatever the meaning or reason the Pentagram Tattoo is worn by allot of people. The placement of these star tattoos varies allot and depending on the size of it can be worn anywhere really. I have seen allot of these on arms, backs and chests but, those aren’t all the areas people place it on.

Recommended: Any of the above members of these religious camps would like this, also naturists, those who wish to have a deeper connection with the basic elements of the earth.
