Captain Kirk, Spock and the Enterprise Crew

With the success of the 2009 Star Trek reboot film, Star Trek promises to be a popular costume for the Halloween season. While there are new costumes based on the new film, you can still opt for more traditional costumes like those from the original Star Trek series or The Next Generation. Each has their own specific style and, certainly, whichever was your favorite incarnation of the franchise is probably going to influence your choice.

The Evolution of Spock's Costume

Throughout the various incarnations of the Star Trek franchise, Spock’s costume has seen various changes – some drastic and some not so drastic.

With Star Trek: The Original Series, the costume worn by Spock was comprised of a periwinkle tunic and blank pants. On the tunic’s sleeves, three gold rings encircled the wrist and, like most Star Trek uniforms, the famous Star Trek insignia resided on the breast. A black shirt, found underneath the tunic, completed the outfit.

Things changed for Spock’s costume for the first Star Trek motion picture, aptly titled, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Unlike the uniform found in the Original Series, this uniform was entirely blue and a somewhat lighter blue as well.

When the second Star Trek movie premiered, a new uniform was introduced, known as the “Monster Maroons.” These uniforms were a deep red and were fairly uniform across the fleet. This uniform was used through the run of the original movies – The Wrath of Kahn, The Search for Spock, The Voyage Home, The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country.

In 2009, JJ Abrams much anticipated Star Trek reboot debuted and with it, a return to uniforms that more closely resembled those of the original television series. Spock’s uniform was once again made of a blue tunic with black pants. However, the tunic was now a deeper shade of blue.

The Evolution of Captain Kirk's Costume

The first costume worn by Captain Kirk, in Star Trek: The Original Series, was a tunic in an avocado shade combined with black pants. While the tunic was actually avocado, on television, it appeared more gold in tone so most costumes now resembled the television look as opposed to the reality of the shade.

For Star Trek: The Motion Picture, as well as subsequent films, the uniforms worn by Captain Kirk resembled those worn by Spock. An overall blue tone in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and eventually the “Monster Maroons” in The Wrath of Kahn – The Undiscovered Country.

Like Spock in the 2009 Star Trek reboot, Kirk’s uniform was returned to a close rendition of its original look.

The Original Series featured the famous solid color top, color varying due to the crew member’s division, and black pants. The term “Red Shirt” came from the original series as Red Shirts identified members of the engineering and security divisions which seemed to claim the highest death toll on the series.

In the 2009 Star Trek film, the costumes once again began to take on the look from the original TV series. Gone are the uniform, um, uniforms and in their place are the varying color tunics and black pants. Like the series, female cadets and officers can choose to wear either pants or skirts.

The trademark Next Generation uniform featured the various colors of the original series according to character division. However, instead of a separate tunic and pants, TNG uniform was actually a jumpsuit with a diagonal “cut” across the center of the jumpsuit where the color melded into black.
