I came across this series when I was in high school. I have to admit that at first I did not like it, but it did grow on me. Today, I can't have enough Star Trek.

Some episodes from the very first season, do end up mirroring the original series. The one that stands out is the one when the crew acted intoxicated. This was a way for them to tell the story and remind the viewers of the past and how the past can be an important cue.

Yes, they may have mirrored some episodes, but they had a lot of new types of stories that we didn't see in the original series.

The Characters

Lets take a look at the different characters of the series.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard

Patrick Stewart plays captain Picard whom is the captain the USS Enterprise.

Commander William T. Riker

This is the First Officer which is also abbreviated as XO for executive Officer. Captain Picard always would come him number one.  Riker was played by Johnathan Frakes.

Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge

Lavar Burton played Geordi. In the first season, I believe he was the navigation officer, but later on, he became the Chief Engineer. That was season 2, when his position changed on the enterprise.  The device on his eyes is called a visor which is what helps him see because he is blind.

Counselor Deanna Troi

Deanna is played by Marina Sirtis. She plays a betezoid. She is half betezoid and Half human. Her father was the human.  She is the counselor on the ship.

Lt. Commander Data

Data was played by Brent Spiner. Data was an android. TOS has a vulcan and TNG has an android. Both can be very annoying. That is what the admiral said in the very first episode of TNG, The admiral was actually Doctor Mccoy.

When I watch TNG, I have to say that some of the shows are funny because of him. Being an android, he does not always understand the humor.

Lieutenant Tasha Yar

Denise Crosby plays the Chief Security/Tactical Officer. Near the end of season 1, her character does get killed off. She did have some reprising roles in the course of the show. Not as Tasha, but a relative. One was a daughter if I remember right. This was from an alternate reality that they had created in yesterday's enterprise.

Lieutenant Worf

Michael Dorn plays Worf whom is the assistant security officer in the first season, but after Tasha is killed he takes the reigns as the Chief Security and tactical officer. Wolf is a klingon whom is brought up with a human parents.  His parents were killed as a kid.

Doctor Beverly Crusher

Gate Mcfadden plays Beverly. She is the Chief Medical Officer aboard the ship.  Season 2, she was not on the show.  They had placed her at starfleet medical for the story, but in season 3 she came back to the show.

Doctor Pulaski

Dianne Muldar plays doctor Pulaski, the chief medical officer.  She was only in the second season.  Anytime I see TNG and she is in it, I know that its season 2.

Wesley Crusher

Wil Wheaton plays Wesley.  He is Doctor Crusher's son.  He knew a lot about ship operations and remembers when Captain picard had brought his father home. He knew enough about the operation of the ship that he eventually became acting ensign.

Chief Miles O'Brien

Colm Meaney plays Miles.  He is the chief transporter operator.  I think that is what he did as most episodes of TNG he did the transporter  In ds9, he was the chief operations officer.

Guinan

Whoopie Goldberg plays Guinan.  She is an El-aurian which is a species of listeners  Most of the characters that Whoopie plays are a bit lively.  This one is all serious.

Lwaxana Troi

I could not go without putting Lwaxana Troi even though she was not a regular character.  She was a reoccurring though.  Lwaxana is played by Majel Barrett Roddenberry. She is the only person whom has done something with each and every series.  Lwaxana is Deanna's mother.  Now this character is very interesting which is what makes her so lovable.

Q

We can't go with out Q, can we. John de Lancie plays Q and does a great job at it.  He is one of the biggest antagonists for the series. The very first episode (farpoint station), you meet Q and he put the human race on trial.  If he's not bothering Picard, he's after Riker.

Why I Like The Show

I love the show.  I think part of the reason outside of my grandfather loving Star Trek, its because of the adventures that star trek has.  You have adventures of Data and Geordi getting intoxicated.  You get Data trying to be human.  Wesley trying to grow up without his father.  Then you have Deanna's mother whom every time she comes on the ship is just a piece of work.  All of that makes the series interesting and enjoyable to watch.  You got series and comedy intertwined.  All the makings of a great series.
