Jedi - A Brief History

The Jedi Knight is a member of the Jedi order.  Trained as a Padawan, a Knight is the mid rank of the order.  Jedi Master is the elite Jedi.  A Padawan becomes a Knight after many years of training and successfully passing the Jedi trials which include the Trial of Skill, the Trial of Flesh, the Trial of Spirit and the Trial of Courage.  Jedi Knights are spiritual warriors and the peace keepers of the galaxy. Trained in the use of the Force, they act as ambassadors performing judicial and diplomatic missions of peace between the planets.  They are the last defense against the evil forces from the dark side.

Japanese Influence

The traditional costume of the Jedi Knight has a strong Japanese influence. The cut of the tunic and the obi are designed very much like the traditional Gi used in Martial Arts.

The outer tunic of the Jedi costume varies in color and basic design. Each Jedi's costume seems to be unique, if only subtly. Obi-Wan's differs from movie to movie. Anakin's gets darker in relation to his inner turmoil. But basically, the outer tunic is over sized and crosses in the front with long flowing sleeves.

Underneath the tunic is an under tunic. The color of the under tunic differs from the outer tunic. It is hard to know for sure the exact construction of the under tunic, but the neckline follows that of the tunic.

The obi is like a sash. It wraps around the tunic. The width of the obi is much wider than that used in Martial Arts. It more closely resembles the obi on a kimono. A leather belt is worn over the obi. The belt has various pouches for storing supplies, such as a medical kit and emergency rations.  And a strap for holding their weapon of choice, the light saber

The Tabbards are wide strips of fabric that go over the shoulders and underneath the obi. The length of the Tabbards varies by Jedi.

The Robe is large and flowing, usually puddling onto the floor. The hood is extra large and can be used to conceal the face. The long sleeves open into a bell shape which flows into the surrounding fabric and gives the Jedi a free range of motion when battling with a light saber. Colors seemed to generally range from chocolate brown to black.

Traditional Fabrics

The traditional Jedi tunic and robe is made from coarse fabric with a homespun feel. The colors are earthy as though hand dyed from natural products. The fabric is heavy and textured. Modern day fabrics such as heavy cotton weave, crinkle cotton and linen, can be used to replicate the handmade feel of the fabrics used in the Star Wars Jedi Knight costumes.

The costume of the Sith is darker and less homey feeling. The darkside uses more leather and fabrics with an expensive look and feel.

Thanks for commenting Jim. I like how they are all similar in design, but with subtle differences for each Jedi.

I never knew Anakin's tunic got darker in relation to his turmoil. Now I'll have to go back and watch the movies again!
