Star Wars Mini Figure Collection
69Star Wars’ Minifigure Collection
During the release of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, you could feel a collective groan from die hard fans of the original series. Gone were the themes of good versus evil, light versus dark, which got replaced an over the top display of CGI and an annoying alien named Jar-Jar. Purists complained that Lucas “sold out” to a younger audience by creating characters that could easily be marketed to children or sold as action figures or be included in the recent Lego Star Wars toy line. While a lot of the grievances are somewhat justified, a lot of it is focused on the doomed love story between Padme Amidala and the man who would be Darth Vader. Most people have shunned this but in its defense; George Lucas seems to present the audience with a simple fact: Even Darth Vader was once a teenager.
Evil had to start somewhere didn’t it? And if you take out all the fantasy and science fiction backdrops that makes the Star Wars saga what it is, at its heart you have the tragedy of an orphaned young boy who was as volatile as any angst ridden high school student. Anakin Skywalker was someone you went to high school or even worse, someone who you were back then. Here was a kid blinded by what he knew was already forbidden love who believes that the adults are holding him back from being a man. He rebels and disobeys authority to proceed in his own way based on his own belief that he is immortal. Having no father figure, young Skywalker is praised by the saga’s true antagonist, Emperor Palpatine, praising him for his abilities as a Jedi, and later seducing him to join the Dark Side by offering a way to save his one true love. Any impressionable teenager with a lack of direction will no doubt take in the praise and the deal no matter the risk because love does conquer all.
Given this, it urges a lot of prequel trilogy critics to stop with their biases for a bit and ask themselves if they saw a little bit of Vader-in-the-making when they were growing up like him.
