Star Wars vs. Star Trek ~ (Rounds 1 & 2)
64Oh that's right, I went there.
This comparison has been debated before on the internet I'm sure, as it has in coffeehouses, libraries and homes for decades now. Which one is better and is it even possible to compare them? In the first round of this Battle Royale of Space we will examine the 10 strengths for each side and you know how I roll.... we need to list 'em so let's get started.
First Star Wars....then Star Trek.
Here are the Top Ten reasons I love each one so much...
ROUND ONE >> Imagination Expansion
STAR WARS (# 10)
The Action Figures a/k/a the ability to re-enjoy the film over and over in your mind aided by the marketing genius of these little plastic guys with lightsabers hiding inside their arms. Every kid who grew up in love with his Boba Fett figure knows exactly what I'm talking about. The fact that I know all the other Bounty Hunters (Dengar, IG-88, Bossk, etc.) comes from them being in this most excellent and innovative Toy Collection. I only had about half of the ones pictured below but oh how I loved them all.
STAR TREK (#10)
The Opening Theme a/k/a the ability to take us all away from the tedium of life and bask in the unknown future just by hearing four words, "Space, the final frontier". The music is of course part of the charm as well but it's the whole package. It just takes you away to someplace where greed and prejudice are extinct and exporation and understanding are our sole purpose.
So it's childhood imagination vs. adult? No contest, we need it more!
Despite all this evidence: Round One goes to Star Trek!
ROUND TWO: The Sequels
STAR WARS (#9)
The Empire Strikes Back - Okay, we meet Yoda, the Ugnaughts and Lando Calrissian plus a visit to Hoth, Degobah and Cloud City. Oh and something else?....what was it? Darth VADER is revealed as Luke's father? And then he promptly cuts Luke's hand off in a father-son lightsaber showdown? Whoa. This one is also setting us up for a meeting at Jabba's Palace as Boba Fett takes Han's body which is frozen in carbonite back to Tattooine.
This is a remarkable science fiction sequel that ranks right up there with Aliens and...
STAR TREK (#9)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - Ricardo Montalban and the creepy slug-worms that crawl in your ears and turn your brains to mush. What can I say? This is the best movie but it just doesn't cut it by comparison. Sorry to all trekkies and residents of Fantasy Island but.....
Round Two is unanimously going to Star Wars!

- The Addiction ~ Why I Can't I Get My Fix?
Why can't I rent my all-time favorite horror movie from Netflix? Every OTHER movie by acclaimed director Abel Ferrara can be rented so why not this one? - J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (A Reader's Companion)
This piece of literature has now fallen into the shadow of the films in terms of overall recognition. Those of us who read it over again for the pleasure we recieve reading Tolkien's prose know better. - 100 Incredible Films (Volume 1 ~ #s 100-91)
Welcome To My World. A world where movies don't have to suck all the time. A world where films could even be seen multiple times and you'd still get new things to enjoy about them.
Right Now the score 1-1 and since we do have 8 rounds to go in this battle, it stands to reason that we could end up in a tie. THE ONLY WAY a tie can be prevented is if YOU the loyal readers and commenters to this hub can convince me my judgment on any one of these rounds is wrong.
Have I got them both right so far?

hehe Jonno is making a bold prediction early.
DJ - Although the ear worm creeped me out and Ricardo Montalban looked buff in the body suit, my vote goes to Star Wars.
yes yes
I don't think you can compare them. Star Trek was a television phenomenon that became a movie series. Star Wars was made exclusively for film. I've enjoyed them both, but if I had to choose between them, I guess I'd go for Star Wars.
Sorry bro, I have been so busy making money I haven't read many hubs and didn't even know this one was there, I'm glad you brought it up because I have a few things to add about this subject close to my heart..
I'm a huge trekky and below are my reasons. (I don't go to star trek conventions or want to wear a klingon mask, by trekky I mean I have alot of respect for the shows structure and extraordinary networking format)..
Hmm..
Honestly my choice is Star Trek although they both have their particular and unique charms.
Star trek has my vote due to realism. As much as it is fantasy and a "prediction" of the future, Mr. Roddenberry had an amazingly accurate account of what the future could be. Much like bill gates in his book "the road ahead" pretty accurately depicted how our future would turn out.
Examples?
The cell phone- has anyone noticed how eerily close to the original communicator "Kirk to enterprise, come in enterprise" the cell phone with some aesthetic modifications IS the same thing, and the communicator like the cell phone is capable of long range communication.
The next generation continues this amazing prediction with the blue tooth phone badge :) the only noticeable difference is privacy.
Although the com badges seem to broadcast the conversation as if hooked into a speaker phone I believe the reality (i read in one of those star trek tech manuals) is that they have a hearing aid device in their ears that acts as both a blue tooth to the com badge/cell phone/walkie talkie unit, and as a "universal translator"
although the cell phone and blue tooth are one piece aka an all around communicator that can call someone via voice command of their name, the badge is connected to both short range walkie talkie status (when their on an away mission) like the Nextel phone and many copycats later, and while on the ship the computer acts as the main phone with the badges working from Bluetooth technology.
The brilliance of star trek is that although many of the electronic gizmos and things like the warp drive engine etc.. They were about 90% accurate in their physics explanations of how things would work/react.. this show was so realistic that it really was believable-
Star wars was pure fantasy and although entertaining as hell, not so realistic.. One cannot truly relate to the themes, although it makes for a great fantasy movie- incredibly entertaining and meditative in that it takes you AWAY from the confines of reality for a long time.
I do love the spiritual side of star wars something that is lacking in star trek. The whole use the force talks about a very real thing that is known in religious circles as "faith"
Star wars brought out some amazing realism ionizing something that before was purely a thought form. The force became real for more people and "faith" became an attainable yet intangible thing.
Kudos for their efforts in this regard, this is the main thing I loved about star wars was it truly opened my mind to believing in ones self and faith etc.. very powerful stuff.
Star wars to me however became too much, after a few sequels the story line became a bit much, the fantasy overloaded my capacitors and I just wanted to go to sleep or do something else.. I never saw the last three prequels because it bored me..
Star trek gets my vote due to its extraordinary networking capabilities, something star wars attempted but realistically couldn't pull off as well.
Star trek has several versions, deep space nine, voyager (my favorite), generations, next generation, original series, and of course enterprise (I may have missed some)
What truly got me about this show was it was both realistic and incredibly inspiring, the nerds love the show because they are smart enough to relate to the incredibly real terminology and realism of just about all of it... but also...
EVERY single star trek series type becomes a different yet highly cohesive part of the series. I consider star trek in all its flavors a "Super-Series" in that you could holographically see the entire collection of episodes in every type of star trek show as ONE amazingly detailed and perfectly cohesive show.
It feels like watching one (i.e. voyagers) after watching another (i.e. deep space nine) the other becomes like a real life memory of "another time in the same world".
Watching star trek I got an incredible experience of another world, watching it you truly can believe that this other world exists because all its different series are seamless to one another. The writers did an excellent job at keeping them cohesive in that they even talk about things in other series interchangeably as if it happened and was in the school records or history books for the united federation of planets.
The beauty of this show is you never bore of watching it, even reruns, and although all of the various series have met their last episode the series is an incredible foundation for future shows if they wanted to add a new piece to the holographic puzzles. No other series on earth has this kind of exponential networking power, perception of an entire world (much like second life the online world, which reminds me of the star trek format).
Once more someone could like in real life, enter the series at any episode and be thoroughly entertained without needing to know the entire realm of star trek to "get it" of what’s happening... although knowing more makes the experience more meaningful.
With star wars if you came in on a rogue episode without knowing the back story its easy to become confused as the entire series is dependant on the entire storyline.
Star trek was realistic and each episode of each show were ALL self sufficient in story line while still being completely connected..
This reminds me of life as each person has a story but you don't need their back story to understand what there about, yet you can later see how they all fit together with all the rest of life. Brilliant formatting here. Thousands of writers, and yet one potent and perfect theme either separately (episodes) or together (super-series)
Many things in the show have become reality, from the communicator, to the blue tooth badge, to those cool medical tricorders (I actually saw one of these online, it looked very close to the movie prop, and it is a bone regrower using ultrasound).
What blows me away is I think most of the things, due to the very nature that many of those technologies on the show were real ideas that scientists were working on sort of pre-visualized on the show making it easier to figure out how they would work. Also the show seems to have this appeal of getting people used to these technologies so their not so surprised when they come out..
Another great show is Stargate which broke down the whole religion matrix, and those magical futuristic "Egyptian" toys the Guaould used to control people and repair human tissues, were not just "magic" they were technologies.
Stargate (both series and all 3 movies) was a powerful and magical history lesson and a lesson of reality- a decoding of myths and "magick" (that’s not misspelled)
Between Star gate, star trek, and a few other amazing shows envisioning our true potential and future probabilities is easier.
I love how star trek started out with the theme that money doesn’t exist then they moved to a more realistic "credits" and "gold pressed Latinum" currency of the Ferangi.. Mostly however they showed how barter was the real currency.
Star wars toys- I love these, this is one area that star trek for some reason failed to deliver. Why didn't they make those cool gadgets and devices? Maybe because they didn't have to, or maybe because they were too real to be exciting to play with..
The truly cool toy I saw was a guy converted his apartment into one of the voyager "living quarters" and sold it on eBay and continues to help people convert apartments into the cool neon look and feel of the ship.
Star trek (later versions) also had some amazing decorating that was very comfortable and interesting. Futuristic but still feasible by today’s standards.. Much li
One more comment on the two. Star trek felt like it was here to stay, I loved new episodes, but star wars to me was like a "fad" that went too long, too far, and over stayed its welcome.
Did you know that in the early 80's their was a star trek cartoon series? You can find episodes on youtube.
I'll definitely be checking it out.
Damn, Jer, that's a freakin' hub you wrote. lol
I have to say they're pretty closely tied for me, but Star Trek wins out in the end.
yeah right? I opened my comment section and went WHOA!
I do like to make an entrance... I almost created a hub out of that after I saw how dam long it was lol, but I figured it would fit in better on your page.. Thanks for letting me vent about that lol I didn't even think I was that passionate about star trek... But you really got me thinking about how those shows impact people.. i.e. the force (spiritual) on star wars, Networking/potential (star trek) and so on...
Thx shannon :) Mr. Funktual here kicks butt when it comes to interresting hubstistics and hubcensuses.... hehe
