When Madison, Wisconsin based Freelance Copywriter Joe Starr started Starr Writing & Desktop Publishing, LLC, he wasn't sure what to expect.

He knew the writing business from his more than 12 years working in newspapers, marketing and public relations. "It was something that I knew and had become very comfortable with," said Starr, describing his climb from the community newspaper ranks to his time with a statewide newspaper and on to doing promotional and technical writing for a Fortune 500 corporation. "They were all incredible experiences in their own ways. I was privileged to have worked alongside some of the best journalists in the business. I consider myself very fortunate."

Coinciding with the opening of Starr Writing in 2005 was the official launch of the business Web site at http://www.starrwriter.com/. Here visitors learn about Starr Writing by viewing the many press release, brochure and other promotional writing and published writing samples created by Starr. "I encourage people to review as much of my writing and design work on the Web site as possible. It's important that they find a writer who will best represent their business. It's about making the right fit. And in the business of words it's about finding the right voice. The more research and work done on the front end means better communication, better relations and more success once you start working together."

And once Starr takes on a client they are not only a client but a friend. "If you don't build that bond with your clients, it sure makes it tough to do business. In the commercial writing business you need to know the businesses you serve on every level possible. You need to be a part of that organization or you will not be able to properly represent them in your writing."

Starr's background in journalism has given him a perspective that many marketing and public relations professionals lack. A need-to-know sense that has helped him deliver his clients incredible promotional and branding leverage. Everything from delivering clients newspaper section-front stories featuring the business to ghost writing advice columns under their business name. "Most marketing people have a degree in communications or marketing or public relations. A few of them went the journalism route but chance are they never stepped foot in a newsroom. I graduated with a degree in journalism and had every intention of using it in public relations, until one day a mentor of mine told me that sometimes it's better to enter through the backdoor to get a look inside before stepping out front." That back door opened into a newspaper writing job, which led to many more years in the newspaper business as a writer and editor. It was during this time that he learned the business from the media's side. Once he finally entered the marketing and PR end he had an insider's understanding that has given him an edge over the competition to this day.

"I love this business because it's new every day. I get to work with so many different businesses. I get to learn about what they do and I get to help them achieve and grow. It's an amazing job and I'm truly blessed."
