Steel shelving can fit any need you have in your home for additional storage space. It's a simple and economical way to modernize your shelving needs when you can't afford wood shelving. The shelves typically come powder coated or have a protective coat of paint to protect them and your valuables from damage. Steel shelving is also treated to prevent rust so you know they will last a considerable time. The difference and one of the benefits of steel shelving is that it is versatile in that it is adjustable on every level. Often it is a kit that you can assemble to any variation of height. It can also be mounted to your wall or left as a free standing unit. This makes mobility easier for redecorating.

Types Of Steel Shelving

While you will find more steel shelves in an office or warehouse setting, there is plenty of home use shelving available. Often these will incorporate wood parts like the shelves themselves and the frame will be steel. But you can find some really nice stainless steel shelving that would look nice in your garage or home office. When you garage is concerned it might be a better idea to install heavy duty steel shelving that attaches to the wall to prevent heavy objects from pulling the shelving over on itself. Free standing shelving is find for home office type situations. Many times these steel shelving units will have wheels on them to make moving them extremely easy.

There are basically two main styles of steel storage shelves: a closed back shelving unit and an open back shelving unit. A closed back unit is what you see mostly in industrial offices. The unit has a metal backing to help secure items on the shelf. This kind of unit isn't as flexible as an open backed unit as it is less adjustable and versatility is limited, however it is wholly functional as any shelving you need. With open shelving the shelves are often stackable. These are widely used in warehouse and club stores like Sam's Club. The open back allows maximum storage capacity with front and back accessibility. In a warehouse this kind of industrial steel shelving allows large items to be stored on the very top shelf. This space is often overlooked in most cases.

Stainless steel wire shelving is what you'll see in most homes. It's smaller and used primarily in kitchen areas like the pantry to store dry goods and other kitchen needs. While it can be chrome plated, as with styles you see in bathrooms, most of the time steel wire shelving is coated in a white plastic. It's always rust resistant but that's not to say it won't rust if it gets damaged and the coating is marred in any way. This is probably the cheapest way to go for in-home storage. It is far less expensive that wood shelving and can serve any function from the smallest storage needs to the most expansive. Whatever size steel shelving unit you need most can be found at your local home improvement store. Often they are disassembled and require the most basic of assembly. Below is a video that instructs you just how easy it is to assemble steel shelving.
