Step Moms support groups are special community initiatives, to help step mothers deal better with handling emotional challenges and pressures in their everyday life. Step moms support groups help step moms to make creative choices in pursuance of her own happiness and well being, gain support and learn the art of the new skills needed to deal with this complex relationship and all that can contribute to a happy family.

Some of the reasons behind the existence for step moms support groups are

-          To create safe forums for step moms to share their personal thoughts and feelings that have been based on their experience.

-          To support, educate, enlighten and empower stepmoms to always be reminded of their own sense of well-being and never to compromise on it for the excuse of an illusion of a happy family.

-          To provide information on their capability to improve any relationship due to their role as a step mom.

It is an accepted belief in society that being a mother is one of the hardest jobs in the world, and to be a step mother probably exceeds that. Step moms support groups help to clear the usually misunderstood role they play as a custodian in their step child’s life due to their feelings of being overwhelmed, being blamed for things that were not of their fault, feeling under-supported, wanting to feel better about their role as a stepmom, but with the lack of knowledge of how to go about it.

A step moms support group should place priority on providing and reinforcing self-care to stepmoms, to deal better with emotions by learning the correct emotional processing skills, and to inculcate a sense of creative problem solving.

Tracing into a bit of historical fiction, stepmothers have most often than not, been portrayed as being wicked and cruel. The wicked stepmother role has been adopted in many a fairytale, some examples being Cinderella, snow white, Hansel and Gretel.  A step mother’s common victim is projected to be her innocent stepdaughter, or step sons have also been portrayed to be equal victims as depicted in East of the Sun and West of the Moon. 

The step mom may be characterised with many evils that is depictive of her character. An example to note is the role portrayal of the stepmother and the witch in Hansel and Gretel. While the stepmother does off with the children to avoid hunger, the witch has a house made of food as the bait to trap children. Ironically, once the children kill the witch, they return home only to find that their stepmother has had a mysterious death. This sort of a connotation between the underlying meanings of the character of a stepmother has perhaps laid the foundation, for even the current apprehension of a person when they realise that a person they know is a stepmother.

Although many examples of unjust stepmothers exist, it would be wrong to deny the mention of existences of loving stepmothers in fiction. Two major pieces of fiction to note are the Disney film, Enchanted and Kevin and Kell.
