Well, I have managed to complete 19 of the 50 mini-games in the fun game for the Nintendo DS/DSi gaming system, Rhythm Heaven. Along the way, I have earned medals, which give me ducats so I can buy little rhythm toys to relax with, like the Slot Monster, a wacky little alien whose eyes spin, and, if you get all three to match, tons of gold coins come out of his mouth - kaCHING! Or the Touch-Tone Phone, that plays a different bright ringtone, and surprises happen if you dial certain phone numbers (More on that in a bit).

SPOTLIGHT: Easy Mini-Games

Today I would like to discuss some of the easier mini-games. At first these can be kind of tricky, but when you find the rhythm, these mini-games are some of the most fun and less, shall we say, challenging that others.

Rhythm Heaven - Fan Club

In this game, you are one of a whole herd of monkeys hired to be fans for a famous pop star. Your job is to hop and clap in rhythm with her song and a bunch of other monkeys. Listen to her sing, and watch out for when she sings three words in a row, like "yeah yeah yeah" - That's your cue to clap four times. Then when she sings the lyrics "I suppose", that's your signal to clap three times and jump up in unison with the other monkeys. If you mess up, they will let you know.

Rhythm Heaven - The Dazzles

In this game, you are competing for a posh spot in the pop group The Dazzles.

Basically, when the spotlight shines on you, you have to kick or strike a pose along with the rest of the members of the group. This is one of the longer mini-games, but you are encouraged to continue when shiny stars materialize as you complete several routines.

Rhythm Heaven - Love Lizards

This is one of the cuter mini-games for Rhythm Heaven. In this game, you are a bright gold lizard whose task it is to win the heart of the friendly yet precise little blue lizard by matching his rhythms stroke for stroke. You both dance to a lively tune with a Samba beat, and as soon as he shakes his tail, which has a fun rattle that sounds like a maraca, that's your signal to move your tail back and forth in the exact same rhythm as his. If you do, you will win his heart and soon have a family of little blue and gold lizards running around!

Rhythm Heaven - DJ School

This is one of the more odd mini-games. In this game, you are a DJ wannabe trying to impress the local Hip Hop DJ with your scratches and beatboxing moves.

It's fun to watch the yellow DJ as he instructs you...his head and shoulders bob in time with the music and it's pretty funny when he gives you your signal to scratch because he's got these gigantic hands that you couldn't miss if you tried.

Secret Numbers - Touch-Tone Phone

When I first got enough medals to 'buy' this Rhythm Heaven rhythm toy, I was all 'ok, so you can press the buttons and get different ringtones - cool I guess'. After you enter your phone number and the phone numbers of people you know to see what they sound like it's kind of anticlimactic. So I started playing songs on it like a piano, and discovered I could play "Endearing Young Charms" by pressing the following key sequence:

3, 2, 1, 2, 1, 1, 3, 6, 4, 7, 9, 9, 8, 7, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, 1, 2, 1, 1, 3, 6, 4, 7, 9, 9, 8, 7, 6, 9, 9, 3, 6, 6, 1, 1, 1, 1.

But I found out that this little phone also has secret numbers you can dial to connect with characters from previous games you have played. You just press 5-5-5 and the character's name or some other word relevant to the game, and voila!

My daughters both have a nintendo DS that they play on long trips and such. Plus their daddy (me) likes to play them too, I occasionally get asked to get them past a certain spot.
