God's Holy Commandments

I recommend prefacing this hub with my two previous hubs that show us what the Word says regarding the End of the Old Covenant and the Joy in the New Covenant.

In my prefacing hubs, we see that the two stone tablets containing the 10 Commandments, written by the finger of God, were placed inside the Arch of the Covenant. The Law of Moses was place inside a wooden box and stored in the side of the Arch. The 10 Commandments are known as the Law of God, which is eternal. It is said these commandments were hewn from the sapphire stone of the very throne of God!

Ezekiel 1:26 and 10:1 confirms that God’s throne is made of sapphire:

"And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it."

“Then I looked, and behold, in the expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim something like a sapphire stone, in appearance resembling a throne, appeared above them.”

Exodus 31:18 confirms they were written by the finger of God: “When He had finished speaking with him upon Mount Sinai, He gave Moses the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written by the finger of God.”

Exodus 32:15-16 state, “Then Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, tablets which were written on both sides; they were written on one side and the other. And the tablets were God’s work, and the writing was God’s writing engraved on the tablets.”

Though I don’t have The Aramaic Bible, it states in the Targums Chapter 1:82-88, “Then it was said to Moses: ‘Ascend to the firmament and I will give you two tablets of stone, hewn from the sapphire of the throne of My glory, gleaming like fine gold, arranged in lines and written by My finger. Engraved on them are the Ten Words, refined more than silver that has been refined in seven times seven [ways]-that is the sum.”

Mark 12:28-31 states, "And one of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, 'What commandment is the foremost of all?' Jesus answered, 'The foremost is, 'Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these!"

Now, look at the first four commandments (shown below). Do you see they are all about loving God? How about the latter six commandments? Do you see they fall into the category of loving man? These are indeed the GREAT COMMANDMENTS by which we live by until Jesus Christ returns!

Love God (first four) / Love Man (last six)

1. I am the Lord thy God; thou shalt have no other gods before Me.

2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven images.

3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

4. Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy.

5. Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long.

6. Thou shalt not kill.

7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.

8. Thou shalt not steal.

9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house.

New Testament Scripture References

Here's plenty of scriptural truth to show you we are to live by God's Holy Commandments BECAUSE we love Him, NOT because we are made righteous by them ~~

Matthew 5:19 "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." Notice that both go to the kingdom of heaven!

Matthew 19:17-19 "... if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments. Then he said to Him, 'Which ones?' And Jesus said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER; YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY; YOU SHALL NOT STEAL; YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS; HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER; and YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'"

Mark 10:19 "You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.'"

Mark 12:29-30 "Jesus answered, 'The foremost is, 'HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD; AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.'"

Luke 18:20 "'You know the commandments, 'DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.'"

John 14:15 "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments."

John 14:21 "Whoever has My commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves Me. He who loves Me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show Myself to him."

John 15:10 "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love."

John 15:14 "You are My friends if you do what I command you."

John 15:17 "I am giving you these commandments so that you may love one another."

Romans 13:9 "For this, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET," and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."

Galatians 3:12 "But the Law has nothing to do with faith. Instead, 'The person who keeps the commandments will have life in them.'"

1 Timothy 6:14 "to keep these commands stainlessly and blamelessly until the appearance of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah."

James 2:14 & 17-18 "What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him?" "In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." "But someone may well say, 'You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.'"

2 Peter 2:21 "For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them."

1 John 2:3-5 "By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, 'I have come to know Him,' and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected."

1 John 3:22 & 24 "and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight." "The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us."

1 John 5:2-3 "By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome."

2 John 1:6 "And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it."

Revelation 14:12 "Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus."

Revelation 22:14 "Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city."

Reminder About Sin and Grace

Keep in mind that ALL SIN is forgivable, except to worship other gods (deny the divinity of Christ Jesus as God) and to call the Holy Spirit unclean. Praise God!

The New Covenant is that of receiving God's grace through faith in His Son's righteousness. It's important to reflect that Abraham's faith was so great, he took his son Isaac up on the mount to kill him as God told him to do. Isaac also had the faith to allow it because he trusted His father and his Father God. Abraham lived 400 years prior to Moses receiving the 10 Commandments. Peter had faith to walk on water, though he sunk when he quickly got scared. We walk by faith, and it is not limited to just observing the 10 Commandments.

Surely, the one who kept all 10 Commandments was still lacking (Mat 19:17-22)! For more on this subject of salvation by grace through faith, I invite you to read my hub Will He Know You? Walking with God is awesome!! Have faith in Him and you will have quite an adventurous, victorious life!

I love your perspective on the things you write. The same truth through different eyes. You seem to find such interesting things. Those tablests were beautiful. I really can see how angry Moses must have been to break them. I can imagine the beauty around the throne as well. Sapphires, emeralds, gold, precious stones, light, worship and love and warmth. What a vision. How in the world do atheists think that men made this up. I love you my sister, forever.

If the stone from the throne is in the arch of the covenant, even today, I would want to view them! According to the Talmud, the Biblical verse "the tablets were written on both their sides" implies that the carving went through the full thickness of the tablets, legible from both sides; it was not a mirror image of the text on the other side. The Talmud regards both phenomena as miraculous! God bless you for reading and leaving some luv, brother :-)
