Introduction

If you've come to this hub looking for a way to stop hair pulling from your own head, then you could be suffering from a disorder known as trichotillomania. This disorder affects a much larger portion of the population than you may realise.

This condition basically means you will have a compulsion to pull out your own hair. This could be the hair on your head, your eyelashes, eyebrows or absolutely any other area of the body. Some people will only pull from one area, where others will pull hair out from more than one area of the body.

One thing that a lot of hair pullers have in common is a sense of confusion, as well as shame that they pull out their own hair. But remember, you aren't weird! This is a disorder that makes it very hard to stop those urges.

Treatment Options

Trying to stop hair pulling can be very infuriating, but it is by no means impossible. Just remember, there is no miracle cure. If you see anybody trying to sell you one, it is a scam. Anyone who's generally interested in helping you will NEVER promise guaranteed results in a period of days. I know this because I suffer with the condition myself.

Medication for Trichotillomania

If you visit a doctor about your condition, they may not even have heard of it! But if they have, they could prescribe you medication. Unfortunately this doesn't always help, so it's wise to try a number of other treatment options first.

Psychological Treatment

Many of the causes behind trichotillomania could be psychological, so it's wise to look to this area for treatment. From my own personal experience I would suggest that you work on being confident and happy in yourself, with who you are. It sounds hard, but eventually you will realise that trichotillomania is simply a part of who you are.

Some people also get psychotherapy. However, even talking to loved ones could help you to come to terms with trichotillomania, which will in turn reduce the stress you feel.

Emotional Support

Thought I mentioned speaking to others above, I know how hard this can be. In fact, I have only every spoken to a few people in real life. The good news is that there are loads of people for you to talk to on the internet that understand what you're going through and how you feel. Just do a blog search in Google and you can read a number of personal stories.

Conclusion

As I said, there is no miracle cure to help you stop hair pulling. But slowly you will learn that there are a few methods of coping, and of reducing the emotional impact that pulling your hair has on your life.
