Where do all these credit card offers come from?!

I get a LOT of credit card offers. I think it's a problem that any semi-coherent person with an address suffers from.

Ever wonder where all those offers come from?

This may surprise you (it surprised me). The 3 major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) SELL your information to credit card companies. Basically, the guys who are "tracking" your credit rating, are selling that very information to the people who want us to go into more debt.

Oh the irony there...

I guess that does explain why they know you are already "pre-qualified" for their offers; they already had a list of people with the appropriate credit scores!

Getting off the List

I found some info on you how can opt-out of pre-approved credit offers.

1) Snail Mail

The FTC has a form letter that you can mail to the 3 credit bureaus. Note, you have to send a copy of the letter to EACH of the three bureaus.

2) By Phone (this is the easy way)

The credit bureaus have a number you can call that will opt-you-out of all pre-approved credit card offers for all three bureaus.

1-888-5-OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688)

Also, I have another Hub about how to get off the bulk mail list.
