If your are like millions of people around the world suffering from the incessant ringing of tinnitus, one of the things closest to your heart is to find something that can stop this ringing in ears you are currently experiencing.

It should be kept in mind that tinnitus is a symptom of some other underlying medical condition.  Tinnitus itself is not a disease.  So that ear ringing in the ears you are experiencing should be a sign or signal that you should get yourself examined by your medical practitioner.  There are many diseases and conditions which can trigger tinnitus.  Among the more common triggers are hearing loss or damage, stress, high-blood pressure or cardiovascular disease, allergies or sinus problems.  It is important to pin point what is causing the tinnitus in order to come up with a proper remedy to stop ringing in ears.  It is only after the cause has been identified that proper steps toward providing you with relief can begin.

As you undergo treatment for your tinnitus or for the medical ailment which is triggering it, there are a few things you can do yourself to prevent the symptom from becoming worse and at the same time help keep your immune system up.

One thing you can do is to avoid stress.  The definition of stress is the consequence of a person to respond appropriately to emotional or physical threats to the person, whether real or imagined.  Stress creates a state of alarm in us and makes us irritable, tenses us up, elevates our heart rate, and generates headaches.  It also triggers or aggravates already existing tinnitus.  One can engage in exercise or relaxing techniques to keep your own stress levels down.

Another thing which can help stop ringing in ears is to watch what you eat.  There are certain foods and substances which can cause or make already existing tinnitus worse.  Avoid caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol.  Salty and sweet foods are not only health risks when taken in great quantities, it can also increase the intensity of your ringing ears.  Moreover, it would be wise to avoid foods which your doctor says can make the underlying medical cause of tinnitus worse.   Should your health deteriorate because of your medical condition, your tinnitus could intensify.

Finally be observant about your medication.  There are some medications and even over-the counter medications which have ototoxic effects.  Should you suspect that your medication is making your tinnitus worse, consult your medical specialist and ask him to prescribe an alternative.
