Many may not realize it but snoring is not a regular aspect of sleeping, it is actually a sleep disorder. Almost half of adults snore on a regular basis but a fourth of adults snore in a manner that can be quite disruptive for both themselves and their partner. Those who snore every time they fall asleep are not receiving the quality of sleep they believe they are getting, and are often very tired after the night. Not only is the snorer not sleeping well at night, neither is their partner as the snoring can interrupt their sleep evening putting a strain on their relationship hindering the ability to even sleep in the same room together.

Snoring occurs when the air flow through the mouth and nose is obstructed, and the noise of snoring is created by the walls of the throat vibrating. Four different factors can lead to why the air flow is being blocked. Bulky throat tissue, mainly from being over weight, can cause snoring. Relaxed muscles in the tongue and throat from alcohol, normal aging, or deep sleep is another way snoring can occur. Obstructed nasal airways from a deviated septum or from a cold can also lead to limited airflow through the nose and mouth. The last cause of snoring is from a long uvula, the tissue dangling in the back of the throat, and can narrow the opening from the nose to the throat.

Snoring is not only a nuisance, as those who snore on a very regular basis can be at risk for serious health problems. An illness, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, often comes hand in hand from snoring. This illness can lead to numerous other problems such as long periods of not breathing from total airway blockage, high blood pressure, increased risk of heart attack and stroke, an enlarged heart, and frequent waking up resulting in serious lack of sleep which can lead to other problems later on.

If depriving yourself and your partner of sleep isn't enough to find a way to stop snoring, the health consequences should be more than enough. Many may say there is no cure for this sleep disorder, or many may not even try to find a way to stop it, as living with it may seem easier. It is important to stop, or help decrease the intensity of the snoring, as doing so well benefit physical health but mental health as well. It is important to step up and to take charge to eliminate this disorder that will only cause harm if left untreated.

A dental device known as a snoring mouthpiece or a mandibular advancement splint can offer the much needed relief from those suffering from snoring. These devices are designed to hold the tongue and the jaw forward during sleep by use of a small plastic mouthpiece, and can also hold up the palate opening airways and allowing a stronger airflow through the nose and mouth. Since obstruction of airflow is basically why snoring occurs, this device is almost guaranteed to help, if not completely fix the problem of snoring since it's main job is to open up airways.

Wearing the snoring mouthpiece is easy, and only needs to be worn when sleeping. The steps to wearing one of these devices goes as follows, first place the mouthpiece in the up right position in your mouth, insert the spatula into the holes in the front of the mouthpiece, and move around your bottom jaw forward until it is in a comfortable position. It might take a few nights to get used to wearing it but the benefits greatly outweigh any discomforts that may be experienced.

Molding the device is just as easy as wearing it, unless it is molded by a dentist but this can be costly. First bring water to a boil, after it is boiling remove the water from the stove, holding the mouthpiece by the spatula place the mouthpiece in the water for about 10 to 15 seconds until the plastic appears soft, still holding the mouthpiece by the spatula place the mouthpiece in your mouth, move your lower jaw forward and bite down, push your fingers against the plastic on the outside while pushing your tongue on the inside while sucking out any air to make sure the plastic fits firm against the teeth. Remove the device and place in cold water to let the plastic set. The spatula can then be removed from the piece.

The snoring mouthpiece may not work for every person that snores, but it has a high success rate of 70% to 90%. It is also relatively inexpensive, especially when compared to the money that can be saved from the hospital bills that would arise from the health complications of chronic snoring. Don't let snoring take a toll on your mental and physical health, take advantage of the snoring mouthpiece, as trying one offers nothing to lose but plenty can be gained from wearing on.
