Stop the Computer Killers
52Don't be a Victim
What do these Killers do?
They infiltrate your computer and cause havoc!
I can tell you now that I myself have had several “killers” and they have destroyed my computer causing me more than once to rebuild it.
These killers take many disguises and pretend that they are something completely harmless, until they are cued to do their damage!

Cues
Some are time based and others are action based.
The time based killers wait for a set amount of time before they strike or they can be based on a certain date. As soon as your computer clock says a certain time has passed or a certain date has come – then it’s Armageddon!
Action based killers wait for a certain action to occur, which could be as simple as turning on your computer or as easy as opening up a file.
And some are even a combination of the two. In other words, it’s waiting for a certain time and an action to occur.
You can never tell what drives these killers to do their carnage, but I can tell you they will if you give them half a chance!
Help is on the way!

Signs of Trouble
Some of them do their destruction slowly and you really don’t notice anything wrong until it’s too late.
Others – the effect is immediate!
The slow killers want you to feel secure and notice nothing! It might be just a slowing of your computer, it might take a little longer for your computer to boot up or it might take a little longer to save a document to your hard drive.
The calm before the storm is the motto of the slow destruction killers. At first you may notice that programs are either not working like they are supposed to or the program crashes in the middle of your task.
Or it could be that you get the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death). If you get one of these, be assured that your computer is on its last leg!
The immediate effect killers are the Meanest, there is nothing you can do to prevent these killers from doing their worst.
The Names of these Killers!
They say that if you know the name of a killer you will render him harmless! Unfortunately, with these killers it doesn’t matter if you know their names or not. They will do their damage just the same!
The names of these killers are… Viruses!
Viruses are the first and last word in computer infiltration. Simple ones simply tie up your computer, whereas complex ones can do virtually anything to an unprotected computer. No one should browse the web without good anti-virus software.
