Storage Beds 101
77The term “storage bed” has only recently become popular as more and more people look for ways to live in smaller spaces. Storage beds are most popular in large metropolitan areas like San Francisco, New York, Tokyo and Paris. These beds with built in drawers, cupboards or pockets allow people to maximize bedroom space and still have a stylish feel and look to their sleeping area. Because many different kinds of beds with storage are called by different terms, it is appropriate and recommended to ask about all kinds of beds when looking online or shopping at a furniture retail location. And because of the wide variety of storage beds and kids storage beds available, we recommend visiting plenty of websites and product review blogs to find exactly the storage bed that fits your home and personality.
Storage Loft Beds
The main telling characteristic of a storage loft bed is the elevated sleeping surface that makes these kinds of beds unique. They can be almost any mattress size, but primarily single or twin making the storage loft bed most popular in a child or teenager’s room. Some may think these kinds of beds would be very plain or ordinary looking, without any imagination going into there design. However, just like many other basic furniture products, with just a few option and accessory changes, each storage loft bed can become a unique creation. In fact, many times parents will purchase a themed loft bed that fits the other decorations and colors of a child’s room. We have seen many quality designed loft beds that look like cars, fire trucks, submarines, airplanes and even skyscrapers! As with many products, you can find the best deals and variety by looking at online retailers and product blogs.
Kids Storage Beds
When it comes to beds for kids and just kids’ bedrooms in general, the concept of storage can be a kind of moving target. But just like for adults there are plenty of kids storage beds on the market and available for your family. Again, the most popular is with an elevated sleeping level, even if it is not as high as a traditional bunk bed. Many times the mattress level will be three to four feet off the ground, with drawers and shelves underneath the bed. This kind of design not only creates areas for clothes, toys and extra blankets, but also eliminates the stuffing of items under a bed that is so popular with standard beds.
There are also kids’ storage beds available with attached desks or work centers. Many times these attachments are perpendicular to the sleeping surface of the bed, and will be large enough to hold a laptop or small monitor computer.
Platform Storage Beds
Platform beds have become popular as of late due to not only their unique designs, but also because of their ease of use with memory foam mattresses. These minimalistic beds don’t have to be mutually exclusive with excess storage options though. A platform bed, by design, is actually more about the kind of mattress used, and its lack of a box spring than it is about what is or is not underneath it. Some of the most unique platform storage beds we have seen actually are designed to appear as if they are setting on top of a low and wide bookcase, or chest of drawers.
Ottoman Storage Beds
Probably one of the lesser known, but more unique storage beds options is the ottoman storage bed. They are rare yet in the United States, but have a very loyal following and decent sales numbers, in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe. When closed, the ottoman storage bed looks much like a platform bed, but the mattress actually is on hinges that are at the headboard of the bed. The mattress lies on a lightweight frame and can literally lift up ninety-degrees revealing a large storage area about the size of a traditional box spring. Many people in apartments use this extra storage space for rarely used clothes or excess blankets, pillows and sheets.
Finding the right balance between sleeping comfort and storage functionality can be a tricky challenge, but with a few mouse clicks and some links you can find the exact furniture piece you are looking for.
