Storm Doors
62My mom was a single mother for quite a while when I was growing up. She was really good about taking care of everything about the house, even when she struggled with some of them. One problem that seemed to plague her each year was getting the storm doors to turn into regular, summer-friendly doors. It should have been simple enough, but we all have those simple tasks that just seem to be too hard to handle.
Storm doors have a variety of uses, but some don't have them. The main purpose is to keep some of the weather out each winter, if you live where that is a problem. Some have doors that they take on and off, and some have storm doors like my mom had. The screen part is replaced by window with each seasonal change. This little change can make a huge difference when it comes to keeping some of the drafts out and the heat in. It's nice to have screen in the summer, but it's immensely impractical for the winter months.
Those that do not live where winter is a problem have a good use for storm doors as well. Wet weather comes and goes, but when it gets bad, or when Mother Nature is lashing out, these doors can help keep some moisture out. This protects the home and also the door that it covers. The same can be said for periods of high winds. There are times when the wind can actually blow off storm doors, but they can offer some protection when they are needed the most. If you get a lot of damage, you may need more secure doors. Those at your local home improvement store can often help you with this and will give you some good recommendations.
To make the most of your screen doors, pick times each year to change them. If you change the entire door, find a good space to store them where they will not get warped or rust. The basement is good if you do not have a problem with water. You can also use a storage shed, as long as you know it is secure. The same can be said if you simply change part of your storm doors from glass to screen each year. Take care of them and they will take care of you and your home when you need that protection the most.
