Children's Story Hour

Story Hour at the Public Library

Story Hour, Summer Reading Programs, and Fun

The Henderson county Public Library for several years now has sponsored a program where assistant librarians go to the various sattelite branchs of the main library and do programs called Story Hour. Each week a different topic is explored and a relative craft or some other hands on project is provided as reinforcement for the kids. Our particular branch library will normally have 5 to 12 young people at story hour which is held at 10 AM on Thursdays.

This is a great learning experience for the children. During the summer months, a reading program is also held and gives the children added incentive to read more books during their summer vacations. At the end of the summer the children who complete the program are rewarded for their accomplishments in reading with special prizes . Many kids participate and set their own goal and objectives with records kept on an individual basis, each keeping their own charts and recording specific readinng achievements .

My grandson, Colton, just got his own personal library card. and particpated in the summer reading program this year. He is only 33 months old and my wife read to him the books he chooses to bring home from the library. We read him the storeis and ask questions so he is proactive in his early reading experience. He loves the stories and we can see progress in his dvelopement.
