Strange and Funny Insects
74I do not like bugs! I would never in my life have thought I could call a bug cute or funny. However, lately I have been seeing pictures of some very strange, cute and funny bugs. I do not hope to meet these creatures in real life, but I thought I would share some of them with you.
The Happy Face Spider is only found in Hawaii. In fact it is only found on the islands of Oahu, Molokai, Maui, and Hawaii. This tiny spider grows to be approximately 5mm. I found the fact that it guards it's eggs and catches prey for it's offspring to be very interesting. I never knew that insects did this. Scientists are not really sure if the face-like markings serve any type of purpose.

Grasshopper
Now here is a grasshopper with attitude. I can just hear him saying, "Are you looking at me?!" No wonder they are the bad guys in the movie "A Bug's Life"! In some countries, like Mexico and China, grasshoppers are eaten. This one looks as if he would bite back!
Katydid
This one looks a little worried. I suppose if I was a katydid out of my usual home of forest and green leaves, I would be worried also. The katydid is a delicacy for many animals and some insects including, bats, birds, spiders, snakes, frogs, toads and more! Ohhh, poor little guy!
Jumping Spider
Is it just me or does this spider look like it's about to cry? Can you see the trembly lower lip, the downward turn of the mouth, the overly bright eyes? Yup, this insect is very sad. Why do you suppose he is sad? Jumping spiders are predator who actively stalk their prey instead of making webs and waiting for it. Looks like the last one got away!
Robber Fly
This is one bug-eyed bug! The eyes are such a lovely shade of purple. Most robber flies eat other insects and do not usually bother humans. Robber flies are also known as assassin flies because they will wait quietly for prey to pass and then quickly pounce on it. They will often eat insects larger than themselves.
This praying mantis seems to be saying "glad to meetcha!" But don't let it's friendly appearance fool you, mantises have been known to eat small frogs, lizards and even hummingbirds. Their main diet is other insects, but cannibalism is always an option in their world. Notice the many spikes on the front legs. The praying mantis can move with lightning speed to capture it's prey in those spikes.
Mantises are the only insect able to move it's head around 180 degrees. It can also see movement for up to 60 feet away. These large insects can grow up to 6 inches and live up to 12 months.

Yug, ugly but pretty. I watch animal planet a lot and have seen a few of your featured actors there. Vey interresting
I am like you I do not like bugs. But I will admit these are interesting and cute.
K@ri, I'm not really fond of spiders. But when I saw Charlotte's web, awwwww it became somewhat different. Hahahaha I love the way how you described them to us. :-)
Wow you really caught some smiling cute bugs.
Not sure I'd want to meet the Jumping Spider, but I'd love to see the Happy Face Spider just once as long as it was outside and not on me. Wonderful hub!
That was a nice journey. Interesting shots of the bugs and good writing, too. I enjoyed it.
CC, Good to see you! I don't like spiders in person...it doesn't matter if they take cute pictures or not! Praying mantises are related to cockroaches, I forgot to add that in...probably because I could have done without the knowledge. LOL--The next one is on zombies, ghouls and clowns, just published it.
men AD, I really don't like bugs! Finding the pictures made me itch all over!!! LOL, but that happy face spider was too funny.
l1 blonde, I couldn't have said it better myself. :D
Thanks ripplemaker! I loved Charlotte, but I wasn't too sure about all her babies. LOL
Raven King, My favorites were the happy face spider and the katydid. Thanks for stopping by!
Jerilee, I've had jumping spiders jump on me and I did not like it one bit! I agree, I wouldn't like them on me, but seeing the happy face in person would be interesting.
James, Thanks for coming along through the jungle!
That spider up top gives me the heebe geebe's. :O
Paper Moon, Was it the slight translucency...the teeny tiny size...or dragging the eggs around? All of those give me the heebe geebe's! But you've got to admit, the smile is sooo cute. :D
You should of named this as sexy bugs! LOL
I can't believe you saw their facial expression in those creepy form?!
Bugs give me the chills...brrr.... but robber fly is cute :)
Not one for bugs, like you, but you bring good points across
May, I would get more traffic if I did, but I don't think I could go far enough to call any bug sexy! LOL, I guess I'm pretty empathetic to see their expressions (or is that a little kooky?)
shamelabbousch, I have an extreme aversion to bugs! I love the robber fly's eyes in the picture...as long as it's not in person, I'm happy.
Birte, It's funny how they seem to have expressions. I would probably not get close enough in real life to see them though!

STAMFORD -- To fight an ongoing pest problem, St. Luke's LifeWorks turned to a 3-year-old expert last week. The organization, which provides housing and education to those in need, hired Ellie, a beagle, and her handler through Bliss Exterminators to determine which offices and residences in the Franklin Street headquarters have been besieged by bed bugs.
