Street Gangs:What can we do?
68Is there a solution?
Gangs have over run our streets. They have flooded our culture with drugs, violence, and crime. They fill their pockets at the expense of the society in general. They cause multiple problems for multiple people but is there a solution to this problem? I would think so. Each gang from my understanding wears a uniform. Each color represents a different gang and each gang has its own territory so why don't we arrest them. That doesn't really do any good though now does it. We just send them to prison where they thrive in an environment that is suited to the life that they were already living. The solution rests in the prison system then. What has happened to rehabilitation? Why aren't we giving them the proper skills that they will need to succeed in the world once they are released? It should be mandatory to receive either a high school diploma or a degree while in prison before being released. This would give people the skills needed to get gainful employment. It would cut down on repeat offenders and cut cost to the tax paying public. We don't need manditory minimum sentences because they don't work. It sure isn't a deterrent to those who commit the crimes. Our prisons are over run with unskilled people that sell drugs because that is how they can make money. At the very least inmates should have to raise their own food. They should process their own meats and grow their own vegetables. This eliminates cost to tax payers and provides not only a skill but also an activity that gives them a sense of accomplishment. If you take a group of violent, frustrated, and dangerous people and isolate them from everyone else with nothing to do they are only going to become more violent, frustrated, and dangerous. This makes sense to me but what do I know I'm just some guy typing at his computer.

Argo,
In my estimation there is an answer. Our prisons are designed to protect the public by incarceration. Many States have tried rehabilitation piece mill and alot of it is just BS. With that said, we need to restructure the entire system, including the courts. All terms should be either 6 or 8 years to life. If an inmate does his part he gains release. This would be done by initialy placing them in a cell 24 hours a day. If they do not cause problems, they are reduced to the privilage of working 8 hours a day and returned to their cell. After a prescribed amount of time and agin with no problems, they are reduced to the third level, were they recieve a High School education, or a vocational school/trade. Complete that they go to the lowest level and live with in a secured facility but everyday are sent out for employment. After completion of 6 or 8 years without problems, with money in their account that they earned, enough to pay rent and food for three months, and provide themselves transportation they are released to parole for a period of one year. Now anytime they miss behaive they are sent back a step or to the begining. Gang members must tell everything in detail and will have ammunity. However, any relapse into gangs, they start all over. This does 2 things. The inmate is responsible for his rehabilitation, no you, me or the State. If he wishes to remain there by not following or complying with the program he can spend his life there and make no more innocent victims. This is the sort version, I have a longer one and will publish it someday.
