Prevention Is Better Than Cure
Due to the varying nature of what stress is to the individual sufferer it's difficult to find one technique that will prevent stress for everyone. There are a number of things you can try and it's best to give them all a go until you find the one that's right for you.
Although stress itself is not life threatening, some of the effects that it might cause can be, so a good start is to look at some of the things that can cause it in order to know what can be done to help prevent it from taking hold of your life.
You may be having problems at work, with your family, due to a sudden or tragic loss, the end of a relationship or marriage, because of health problems or poor diet - almost anything can be a trigger for stress. So what can you do to prevent it?
Start by working on those areas of your life that are likely to cause stress. If you have a journey to work that starts the day off on the wrong foot then look at someway you can make the journey easier i.e. could you leave earlier and avoid the traffic? Could you go by a different route? Could you use public transport meaning you don't have the frustration of driving - look for alternatives.
Have a look at your diet. Some of the food and drink you consume can have an adverse affect on you physical and mental wellbeing. If you're feeling low to begin with everything that goes wrong will tend to take on greater importance, even if it's not something that would normally have worried you. If you get into a negative state you'll tend to focus on the negative things that happen to you, which in turn can cause other negative things to happen - it becomes almost a self fulfilling prophecy.
Try exercising. Not only will exercise help to build up your body it'll also help to build up your confidence. The reason it can build up confidence is because of the release of endorphins which will help you feel better about yourself. When you feel better about yourself you're more likely to be able to face problems from a more confident angle and find a solution.
Next, get a good support group of family and friends. Being able to talk with people you trust is a great way of getting a new perspective on your problems, and they may be able to come up with solutions that you haven't thought of.
Stress needn't be the overriding emotion in your day, there are ways to prevent it from happening and a little bit of action right now can stop it from becoming all consuming.
What Does Stress Mean To You?
If you were asked for your definition of stress would it be the same as that of your partner or family? The chances are it wouldn't. Stress is something that can be quite unique to the suffers i.e. some people may hate going to work on the train and it will cause them stress, whereas others may see it as a time to catch up on what's going on in the world, so it can actually be a stress relieving time for them.
Stress, which is generally seen as an increase of pressure or anxiety on someone, can happen at almost anytime depending on an individual's coping abilities. In many ways stress can be a good thing, it's a natural response to certain potentially life threatening situations, but if we aren't able to handle it in a healthy way it can stop use from functioning properly.
As life gets more complicated, and our free time more restricted, it's natural that we'll start to suffer an increase in stress as we try to complete everything we need to in the time we have. This stress will then start to affect other areas of our daily work and home life, so the cause of the stress needs to be indentified as quickly as possible so that a solution can be found.
So what steps can you take to relieve stress when it starts to get too much for you to handle? One of the quickest and easiest things you can do is to take deep breathes, it may sound like a cliché but it really does work. Breathe in through you nose, fully filling your lungs. Count to six and then exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat that over a period of three or four minutes. Next you could try doing some form of exercise. When the body exercises it releases endorphins into the system and these endorphins give you a feel-good factor which helps to lift feelings of stress.
So, although stress will mean different things to different people there are some very simple things that we all can do to help relieve ourselves of some of the potentially more harmful aspects of it - try just one or two of them the next time you feel stressed and see how quickly you can regain control.
