The "Secret" of Stress Control

When you're having a full blown stress attack, it's hard to figure out the cause. It's usually easier to resort to medications or herbal remedies just to get some immediate relief. However, being hasty will lead to only temporary results and the stress will return when the medication wears off.

Being able to control your stress allows you to be in charge of your life. You'll be able to cope with your problems and avoid the stressors in your daily life. Here are some ways to handle stress in your own personal way.

First, know what stressors occur in your life and how they affect you. Which events, scenarios or people tend to "push your buttons?" Stress is your mind, emotions and body being affected in a negative way and it usually follows that same path. Most of the time, stress begins with thoughts, then filters down to the emotions and if left uncontrolled begins to impact your physical body.

Get away from everything in your quiet space to reflect on what things cause you stress. Write it down, if you can. Analyze each item one at a time to see if you can narrow the cause of each stressor. Then you'll be able to come up with a way to try to defeat each one. Talking with someone you trust is also a good way to vent all those bottled-up emotions, enabling you to "vent."

Since you've figured out what's causing the stress, now you need to create some solutions. Resorting to medication is a temporary fix, but we're looking for a more permanent solution to enable you to control your life. Don't let your problems control you, as stress usually rears its ugly head when you feel out of control. You'll feel stress almost immediately in these circumstances.

Relax. Face your problems head on. You'll figure it out. You always do! Think of another time you've handled a similar problem. You can use music therapy or mediation to help you relax and clear your mind for a fresh start.

Aromatherapy with scents like jasmine and lavendar have been proven to have a calming effect, enabling your mind to clear. This is particularly effective if you plan to sort through all your problems to find solutions for each.

Stress is usually precluded by a problem. Don't let these problems pile up. Procrastination only makes the problems, and therefore the stress, worse. Deal with your problems one at a time, feeling confident as you go that you are in control. Loss of control is its own stressor.

Now you know the "secret." Identify the causes of your stress and create your own ways to deal with them. You CAN do it. You're in control.
