What is Stretch Marks

STRETCH marks also known in medical language as 'Striae distensae' are a group of common conditions affecting the skin depending on the complexion of the person. They are either light or dark coloured linear lesion found anywhere in the body and are due to previous stretch of the skin. They are most commonly found around the breasts, buttocks, thighs and the tummy.

They could be a cosmetic nightmare especially in women. These marks are really a form of scarring of the skin occurring in the deeper layer of the skin called dermis. The scarring results because the important constituent of the skin, collagen, has been replaced with scar tissue. As a result of this replacement, normally present sweat glands and hairs are absent in such persons.

Who gets Stretch Marks

This common condition may be present in up to 50% of the population. Most especially women. This condition usually first appears during the first pregnancy and its extent varies from person to person and from family to family.

It is unknown why some women do not get stretch marks. Family predisposition and genes have been suggested.

What are the other causes of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are associated with a hormonal condition called Cushing's Syndrome. They are also associated with steroid usage. Family history is quite important as black women with a history of breast or thigh stretch marks are more prone to developing stretch marks. Their development may also be associated with rapid weight gain or the adolescent growth spurts.

What is the probable outcome

Stretch Marks do not pose any health risk to the affected. However, it may be a source of psychological and emotional difficulties. Many women who have it are apprehensive at exposing the affected areas of their skin. These may ultimately result in a feeling of inadequacy and loss of confidence.

In certain women however, stretch marks may cause symptoms such as burning, biting, peppery or itching sensation. If these lesions are scratched, they may result in skin sores as the skin is already thinned.

How is Stretch Marks treated

The specialist who manages stretch marks is called DERMATOLOGIST.It must be recognized ab initio that this condition is 'stubborn' to treatment.

Various treatments have been applied with variable outcomes in different persons

1. Various creams

2. Dermabrasion - a surgical procedure designed to remove skin imperfections (such as scars) by abrading the surface of the skin with fine sandpaper or wire brushes.

3. Laser treatment
