Students don't usually have great credit. Most of them don't have credit at all and some of them have bad credit. When we're young this simply isn't something that we worry a ton about and usually mistakes come with our youth. When I was in school my credit was terrible. I didn't take care of it well at all.

The economy hasn't helped at all either. Your credit might not be too bad or it might be horrible but if it is not damaged then you should feel special as you are definitely the exception and not the rule. So what do you do if you are looking for student loans with bad credit? After all you still want to go to school so that you can get educated and qualify for a job that will get you out of this financial mess.

There are student loans that require credit and there are student loans that don't. This article will help you to learn about what your options are and how you can effectively get your school paid for even if your credit isn't that great right now.

There are plenty of student loans that don't require a credit check. People often look for bad credit student loans only to discover that most student loans have nothing to do with credit. There are private student loans for bad credit, however, and they require a credit check and solid credit history.

The First Steps

The first step when looking for bad credit student loans is to find out how bad your credit really is. Many people are not even aware of their real credit score, and are therefore not able to effectively tackle the problem.  So use one of the many online credit score services that pull data from all three credit agencies.  Then go over it with a fine tooth comb and look for anything that is wrong and anything that is easily fixed.

Same thing goes for any debt on which you have defaulted.  If you failed to pay back a lender go back and pay them off.  At the very least start making payments again and start paying off your outstanding debts.  Doing this will do wonders for your credit history.  It might take a while but your score will thank you.

Aside from improving your credit score what else can you do to get student loans for bad credit?  Well lucky for you student loan lending standards are not as demanding as many other types of loans.  There are also many government programs to that help subsidize or at least guarantee your loan which makes it a lot cheaper for you.  The government just like your parents wants you to go to school, get an education, and get a good job so that you can be a more productive member of society.  Because of this there are a plethora of programs in place for the willing student.

In order to get at these programs do your internet research and also go into your schools financial aid office to see what they recommend.  Since they help kids all day long they know the ins and the outs of the system and can usually find a solution for you so that you can pay your tuition.  Another thing to look at are grants and scholarships.  If you can qualify for any of these then you will have a better chance at paying for school.

Student Loans That Don't Require A Credit Check

Most government loan programs don't require any type of credit check and that's great news for student. If you can qualify for Stafford loans you won't have to have your credit checked at all and that means it doesn't really matter if it's good of bad. Perkins loans fall into this same category.

You can't borrow an unlimited amount of money through Stafford loans so I would use them during the first few years that you're in school. Use that time to work on your credit score. That way by the time you need to get private student loans you'll already be well taken care of. You should be able to borrow plenty of money to get through school for two years with federal loan programs.

This obviously is a great solution for people that are searching for 'student loans bad credit' and other such terms on the internet.

Make Sure To Apply For Pell Grants

Before you apply for student loans at all, make sure that you try to get money through Pell Grants. They don't have to be paid off so obviously they're a lot better than student loans. If you can't qualify for the Pell grants take a look at student loans. I wrote an article about Pell grants for bad credit but honestly credit doesn't have any effect whatsoever on Pell grants.

Cheapest Student Loans

I have also written extensively about how to find the cheapest student loans - a must read for people that are thinking about borrowing funds to pay for their educations.

Additional Resouces

When you have bad credit, you need to educate yourself as much as possible, otherwise your financial situation will continue to follow you around. I would love to help you out as much as possible and for that reason will continue to write articles about dealing with bad credit. Here are a few of the ones I've already done:

FHA mortgage loans are a great option for getting into a home with bad credit. They are supplemented by the federal government. This is great because as long as you have haven't had a bankruptcy, you'll be able to qualify without too many problems. FHA loans are for first time home buyers so if you already have a home and need to refinance, you're going to want to take a look at refinance mortgage loans.
