Start writing your resume with one goal in mind - to generate interest in order to be invited for job interviews. Many make the mistake to think your resume need to be a full scale autobiography on yourself. All you really want your resume to do is to tell the prospecting employer that you are the most suitable aspirant for the vacancy on offer.

Whether you’re looking for a part-time job, a summer internship, or full-time employment after graduation, a good resume is an asset you can use to your advantage, more so if you are searching for your first real job. There are some important facts and factors that you would want to keep in mind when drafting your first resume, more specifically, what are the essentials to include in to your student resume. Here are some common pointers that are generally forgotten:

  • What kind of person are you? What are your strong traits and which of those traits will suit the vacancy you apply for best?
  • Do you have any associations with the DECA, Religious Associations, Sport Clubs etc.
  • Do you or did you do any voluntary or charity work? Volunteer work shows an employer you are willing to do good work without remuneration.
  • What courses have you taken?
  • What can you do? Computer skills are very beneficial, in particular programs relating to the MS Office Suite, Adobe Photo Shop or web programming languages.
  • What have you done with your spare time? How did you apply it to enrich the lives of others or salvaged their situations?
  • Once you know what your strengths and weaknesses are, you can style your resume on your strengths and better your chances on finding a good job relating to your best qualities. If you can do that, you will create interest and land job interviews.

If you have limited work experience, the best resume format to use is probably the skills resume format. In this format, educational qualifications are listed first and then other qualifications you might have and your employment history will be listed last in chronological order.

Great tips! I've also read that if you have job history, including a cover letter mentioning your history of attendance and never (or rarely taking sick days) - especially if that can be verified with your prior employer.

These days, that can be just as important to an employer as other factors.
