What are the best stuttering books available?

There are many stuttering books available, each extolling the virtues of its worth to sufferers. These are available from most high quality book stores, and online retailers. However, it can be hard determining which books are best suited for your needs. Below is a short review of five of the most popular that a currently available.

Self Therapy For Stuttering

Written by Malcolm Fraser, who was the founding director of the American Stuttering Foundation, this is widely regarded by sufferers and professionals alike as being one of the best books available on stuttering. A stutterer himself, Fraser, (now deceased), introduces a self-therapy program that aims to help the sufferer tackle and control their problem. Providing guidance to understand emotions and attitudes that the problem creates, exercises are explained to help conquer them in a simple to understand and practical way.

A Stutterer's Story

In this sometimes emotional personal account, Dr Frederick Murray PhD tells his own story of dealing with his stutter as a child. From the experiences he faced with loneliness, times of shame and embarrassment, this tale takes the reader on an eventful journey. It continues to provide an objective review of what can and is being done to understand and treat the condition. A great read for both sufferers and those who live with a sufferer, it perfectly explains the challenges that can be faced and explains how to deal with them.

Advice To Those Who Stutter

Provided by the Speech Foundation of America, this book compiles the testimonies from a select group of speech therapists, all of whom are stutterers themselves. Each contributor explains their own experiences and the therapy they used to help conquer and control the problem. In the final contribution, by Charles van Riper, each story is referenced and how the methods outlined in each one could be beneficial.

Coping with Stammering

Written by well respected British speech therapists, Trudy Stewart and Jackie Turnbull takes the problem of stuttering, (or “stammering” as it is often referred to in the UK), and looks at the basic issues faced in everyday life. It sensibly explains how to deal with situations such as work and socializing, to talking on the phone and speaking in public. Also providing suggestions for helping improve control and giving support for dealing with those times when progress is minimal, it is a useful aid to dip into.

The Stutterer's Survival Guide

Regrettably, this guide by Australian Human Consultant and stutterer, Nicholas Tunbridge, is currently out of print, but should be available from libraries and through health care providers. Having suffered from a stutter throughout his life, the author takes the reader through how he has personally managed to take the lessons learned in therapy, and apply them practically to “real life”. He also goes on to explain how he has dealt with certain situations at work and interviews and the like, and suggests how these can be dealt with successfully.

As with books read for pleasure, some types will appeal to one type of reader, and others to another group. This is also the case for stuttering books. With so many to choose from however, if you are a stutterer, it will not be too long before you have found a book that relates most closely to you and your experiences.
