Important Points to Remember when using article directories
Don't submit the same articles that you have on your website. Your attempt to get a nod from search engines may backfire. The search engines view duplicate articles as a negative. Wite quality articles for the directories, but don't use the same ones on your site.
I prefer article directories which allow you to correct articles that you post. There's nothing worse than going back to read your article and finding a typo after it's online for all of the world to see. It's a relief to be able to go online and quickly correct the error. No one want to go through a lot of hoopla to get the offending article removed or corrected.
Choose article directories with the highest traffic and a high page rank. Get more bang for your submission by selecting directories that have it going on! Even if another publisher does not select your article, you could benefit from the clout of the article directory site.
Directories which include stats are disireable. It's fun to see how many people viewed your article, and how many people e-mailed it. You may also see the number of people who downloaded your article on some sites.
When you post your articles on directories, people begin to recognize your name (similar to the social networking sites) and with that recognition comes trust and status. Writing articles for just about any venue helps you to earn a reputation as an expert or at least a knowledgeable person. Readers are more likely to make purchases from people and brands they trust.

Goarticles.com has a Google pagerank of 3, which is o.k. but not great. I don't like the front page of the directory. It seems a bit jumbled to me. They should use pictures and more white space on the front page.

Hey now that's a lot of great info. I agree with the ability to edit option. Nothing is more aggravating than looking back and seeing typos *nudge, nudge, wink, wink*. Thats why I like this site better than Triond, it's a right pain to fix errors there. Your back link page is awesome! I never would have known there were over five hundred back links to my podcast.

Article directory scripts are now freely available with the promise of earning big money. Because of this there are over 8 million article sites on the web. Your list here is very good pointing out the true and tested directories. I agree where you say you get more bang from your articles. High page rank sites well visited are far superior backlinks than the 8 millionth article directory.

As a fan of concise writing, I appreciate yours. Article submission is said to be one of the effective traffic generators, since those coming to a site are often said to be presold to the service or product. This is because what enticed them were articles that fit their interest.
My question is this, since one can rewrite content from anywhere, won't one's 'authority' be tainted when a reader notices that one's article covers too much the same content as, or reads like a rehash of another article?
I have always wondered why hubpages is usually not included in a list such as yours. If anything, it is much easier to get listed when your article is on this site than on some of the other sites you mentioned. :)
