Submitting Social Bookmarks Yourself vs. Using An Automatic Submission Service
71DIY (manual submission) vs. Auto Service
There are a growing number of services available that will submit bookmarks for any of your sites. Many handle it automatically, some are free. Some let you choose which sites to mark to, others take a shotgun approach and hit them all (I saw one that said they submit to over 100 sites!). Some of the sites I've come across:
- socialmarker.com
- socializeit
- submitbookmark.com
- socialsubmit.com
- socializer
- onlywire.com
There are also a number of services that will manually submit your marks (some in the list above may do manual submits, I haven't had a chance to review them all yet....more hubs for another day!)...i.e., it's not an automated process, so there is some selection and decision making involved on their part...which is good for the user. Most charge a fee based on how many marks you want.
There are some advantages to going the automatic route - it's fast and hands off. Sometimes free.
The downside to automatic....it's hands off.
There are so many different niches within the SB spectrum right now that I think you really want to be selective where you mark you stories. Some of the auto-marks could be seen as spam by the spiders.
Another way to look at it -- if you go the auto route you'll still want to go check them all to make sure they were done like you asked (and paid for), so for me, might as well do it yourself anyway. And the sites who proclaim "we submit to 100+ sites"...well that seems a little nuts, I don't know, as there are only about 60 sites that generate more than 20k unique visitors per month (and only about 35 over 100k), and then a portion of even THOSE won't even make sense for your niche....then the remaining 70-100 sites are just tiny. Not that there's anything wrong with tiny, except you won't get the punch from a traffic standpoint that you might get at a larger or mid-range site.
Most of the accounts are simple to set up, and you only have to do it once of course. Then you've got your toolbar loaded up with all your buttons so you can fly through and be very selective about where you mark what...and be a lot more effective that way.
If you have a big operation with a ton of blogs and microsites, then you probably have some people working for you anyway, and once they learn the system of what goes where (i.e. don't bookmark an SEO blog post the shopping bookmark site Kaboodle; do bookmark to Sphinn or PlugIM -- don't bookmark the new shoes you're offering for sale on Newsvine, etc).
Auto-markers serve a purpose and meet a need (I've used Social Marker before) but also think about doing it yourself, especially if you're just getting started with blogging etc.
