Change Brings Opportuntiy

There is no doubt in anyone's mind that the world economy is in bad shape.  This current economic crisis will most likely go down in the history boods as one of the worst downturns since the great depression.  The question is what does this economic contraction mean and, more importantly, what can you do to profit in these times?

Part of the problem that caused the depression of the 1930's was a change in the basics of how economies were constructed.  Up until the first part of the twentieth centruy the majority of economic activity dealt with agriculture.  The farm populations were huge as most people concentrated on growing products to sell and support themselves and their families.  These agricultural economies worked well to support the masses even though the lifestyles were just above subsistance levels.

At the end of the 19th century and beginning of the twentieth century there was a major change from farming as a major employer to manufacturing as the basis for economic growth.  This caused an upheaval in the economic landscape as people moved off of the land and into urban areas in search of jobs.  It also meant that a lot of people who had been successful in the farming communities now found that they possesed skills that were no longer needed.  Think blacksmiths and wagon makers.

The bright side of the equation was that there were new jobs but unfortunately most of the people with the old skills were not able to make the transision to the new job requriements.  This left a large part of the population with no viable means of being a part of the economy and, in turn, with no marketable skills.

This is the situation we are in now.  We are moving quite rapidly from an economy based on manufaturing to one based on information technology.  The opportunities abound in this new economy but not for people with the old skill sets honed buy building products in large manufaturing facilities.  The key to your success will be to develop the skills and thought processes necessary to claim your share of the new economic pie.
