Sugar Free Maple Brownies

This is a simple recipe for maple brownies with one exception. We don't use sugar. In its place we use Xylitol. Xylitol is produced by hydrogenation of of xylose, which converts the sugar (an aldehyde) into a primary alcohol. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol which goes very slowly into you system.

You will need:

  • 2 squares of 1 ounce each unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/3 cup shortning
  • 3/4 cup Xylitol
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 half cup sugar free maple syrup

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt the chocolate in sauce pan over low heat or melt in microwave. Stir constantly to make smooth. Scrape into mixing bowl and put in xylitol, eggs, and vanilla. Stir in remaining ingredirents and then spread in greased 8x8x2 pan.
Bake util the brownines begin to pull away from the side of the pan. Bake 30-35 minutes or until a tookpick that is inserted comes out clean. Cool. These brownies will have a hint of maple flavoring that is just right. You can always increase the amount of Xylitol if needed. Here you have a sugar free dessert with enough chocolate appeal to satisfy the hardest chocolate lover out there. Serve warm with a dollop of sugar free whipped topping.
