Sultan of Johor and The Death Sentence

Today, let the kopitiam refresh the reader's memory on Malaysian history. This tale concerns the southern state of Johor and it's all powerful monarch, before his highness ascended the throne.

The Sultan of Johor, then Tengku Mahmood Iskandar, has a very controversial history. First he was stripped as the heir to the throne by his father, Sultan Ismail, in 1961 after assaulting six people. In 1972-73 however, the young monarch faced a much more serious charge. He was charged with manslaughter and sentenced to death by another young prince who is now the Raja of Perak, Hon. Mr. Justice Raja Azlan Shah.

The Sultan of Johor (Tengku Iskandar), was charged with murdering a Chinese man who was said to be a smuggler due to a dispute. When he was caught, Tengku Iskandar pleaded (falsely) that the man he murdered was a Communist agent. The court, presided by Raja Azlan Shah, didn't buy this story and sentenced him to death.

His father, Sultan Ismail, stepped in to save his eldest son from a gruesome fate. Tengku Iskandar was sentenced to six month's jail and ordered to pay a fine of RM6,000. However his father told him in no uncertain terms that he would never ascend the throne of Johor.

And so, Tengku Iskandar's brother Tunku Rahman, became the heir. Now in 1977 Sultan Ismail's wife, Ungku Tun Aminah, died in a car crash. Subsequently he married again to Tengku Nora binti Tengku Panglima Raja Ahmad. Tengku Iskandar seized this opportunity to marry the sister of his father's second wife - Tengku Zanariah binti Tengku Panglima Raja Ahmad.

A palace coup was in the making. Sultan Ismail was very ill in 1981. The heir of the throne Tunku Rahman was away overseas. Suddenly Sultan Ismail passed away peacefully in 1981. What came next however was an even greater shock. Tengku Iskandar emerged from his father's death bed declaring that his father had pardoned him at his last breath and reinstated him as the heir.

What proof did he had? A document pardoning and reinstating himself as the Crown Prince with his father's fingerprint as a royal thumb of approval. The Chief Minister of Johor at that time, Tan Sri Othman Bin Mohd Saat, couldn't believe what had happened. He questioned Tengku Iskandar's fishy document. He had no power however to stop the royal coronation of Tengku Iskandar (neither did his brother who was overseas). Thus Tengku Iskandar ascended the throne of Johor and is now known as Sultan Iskandar.

The Chief Minister of Johor was pushed out of power in 1982 and the rest is history. Check the links to various shenanigans of Sultan Iskandar and his offspring after he ascended the throne (and became the most powerful man in Johor):

  1. Demolish Causeway
  2. Malaysian Royal Arrested Over Wedding Brawl
  3. Douglas Gomez Assault and Private Adam Amok
  4. Son of Royal Beats Policeman's Wife

Those are but a sample of the thuggish behavior of this most powerful royal family. The Douglas Gomez assault and it's consequences in law is covered here.

Goldenhub, you twisted some of our Johore history. The late Sultan of Johore married Tengku Zanariah long time before his late father married Tengku Nora. For Goldenhub and other Malaysians info, no matter how bad people said about the Sultan of Johore, true Johoreans respected and loved their Sultan. When the late Sultan Ismail passed away , many Johoreans were grateful that Sultan Iskandar became the Sultan instead of his brother. Al-fatihah to the Almarhum Sultan Iskandar of Johor.

this guy (the late Sultan) was an asshole, thinking he was a big piece of crap, which he is. he and his family are thugs at best, worth the same as any jailbird in the malaysian jail.

he has used his power to absolve himself and now his sons from their actions of killing and maiming of innocent Malaysians. it is well known that they have in the past done so with wanton disregard for the law.

I hope God pardons his soul

"however, the young monarch faced a much more serious charge. He was charged with manslaughter and sentenced to death by another young prince who is now the Raja of Perak, Hon. Mr. Justice Raja Azlan Shah."

I have doubts over the accuracy of this statement.

Firstly, Tengku Mahmood Iskandar was not a "monarch" at the time, his father Sultan Ismail was.

Secondly, people who commit manslaughter are not sentenced to death but to a long jail term, unless the charge was later changed to murder during the course of the trial.

That said, his brutal and thuggish behaviour is inexcusable but I'm not gloating over his death, as that's an issue between him and God.

@ALPenang,

Shame on you fellow Penangite.. Just because they are Sultans, why should we respect them?

Respect is earned, not a given.

Sultans who have shown total disregard to justice and the common law should be treated like any other criminal. Royalty does not absolve one from following the law. I am very sure the Al-Quran that all men are the same without any prejudice.

The Sultans are just lucky to be born into royalty. To hell with them if they treat their subjects like dirt.

So, to the passing of the HRH, he can burn in hell!

If you want to put history in context than accept the facts of pendatang. If you cant accept the fact, do not discuss the history of anyone.

After all, it was 1960s,70s,80s. What were you and your father be doing then? Fucking bitches on a one night stand or weeknend orgy? It was accepted then and it was history. Grow up!

BTW, wikipedia??? Not a reliable source when anyone can amend anything they like and feels good. Even scholars wont accept wiki as a reliable source in their foot or endnotes. Wikipedia = Rubbish of the highest order.

Iskandar Malaysia? He never asked for that. Asked Ghani Othman and other political master.

List of good things? Here are some before 1957: acceptance of foreigner; allowing temple and shrine even in the middle of d city; trading opportunity; better living condition as to compare to China, India, Middle East etc.

newgen and all,

By your nick i assume you are one of the younger generation here. Gen Y or Gen Z. Probably Gen X although unlikely. I also assume you travel alot around the globe through your lifetime and lucky enuf to be on the day their states dignitaries passed away. I also assume you seen during that day, there were no such thing as mourning or equivalent to wearing white/black wrist or cancellation of event to show respect. Bottomline i assume you are just bollocking.

Try to be in China or Cuba or US or UK or any other states when their head of state or head of government or even their dignitaries passed away, and appreciate the similarity here.

I was once like you, being told all the grandmother's stories about my Sultan even they do not even seen what they told me. I assume I Brogahill is in the same generation as I am since I did play sports during TBJ in EC. I also once used not to like them due to all the stories told and even just about to cross path with Sultan Ibrahim at one time in the disco Holiday Inn. I guess you must be suckling and not even known the disco exist.

Well, that was the past. After I was tasked personally to them on official duty, the manner they treated me and my family, I concluded that all the stories told were exegerrated if not myth about them.

I do agree that they are no saint but at least they change in becoming a better person. Whatever bad stuff they had done, is beyond your time and you all should comprehend it is just the same thing almost all of us did when we were at their age. Unless you were born saint and not even masterbate even once in your lifetime.

Some said there is not point having them as tax payer money involve. Well do not forget that you are living on the land that used to be theirs and was rob by politician. Regardless of how this land being attain as it is similar everywhere around the world.

What I suggest let almarhum die in peace since he had not screw you or your family stinking arses. Give Sultan Ibrahim the chance to make changes as I personally seen him did a lot. If you have a case, bring them to court if not, I sugesst shut the fuck up and move on.

Dear newgen,

So much that we try to be an idealist in our daily living, but most of the time while living in a society, we have to be realistic. We live in a democratic society where the voice of the majority supercede. And we agreed to that model once we decided to be a Malaysian. It does not means that the minority will be left out but they just dont get the priority and we have to accept the fact. I have to accept the fact I am the minority while completing my stint here in Aussie.

Then there is this thing called global perception where other country looking how stable and unity is the society in Malaysia. Unstable and disunity? So long Malaysia, I'll invest somewhere else and that is bad for us.

Lets look back into our own family then. Someone passed away, we still do the mourning in accordance to our belief. Not a forced one though but all abid to it even though the deceased at one stage screw our arse. Why? Because we do not one the other relative look bad at us, I guess.

Now we look back at the bigger perspective. Since he is the head of state, he has the privy just like us at our own small government called family. And his obviously greater than us that allows mourning to be enforced. While living in a democratic state, like it or not, just follow the rule of law.

Back to your question of does it makes sense? Yes it makes sense if you are ruling your own country where you are the head of state and government. In this context, obviously it does not makes sense as the majority have spoken for a state mourning. There is no wrong to disagree but when decision are made, just follow.

newgen  says:

dear newgen(1),

yes, if i don really know my neighbour, then i might not mourn for them. if i do feel pity for my neighbour, i mourn, and that happens when i know them a little.

what i'm trying to point out here in a humble way is that i believe a big part of the nation does not really bother the royal bloods. I remember I did studied about them during our primary schools, but as we grow older, things get to become irrelevant. not sure if all the british love their kings too.

any ideas what the people can do?

If that is what you believe, then you deserve your Ruler. WE want a Ruler with high morals, but if you are satisfied with mediocrity then you deserve to live under a tyrant.

Bugisbentanjohorean  says:

Dear newgen,

I cant agree or disagree with you as we need statistic to support that. While I was in UK some two decades ago, there were issues with the monarch but until today, they are still there. Just ask ourself, who are the ppl that questioned their existence in the first place? A rhetoric question i guess.

Dear Randy Barat,

Its not that we cant be critical towards them but the manner must be right. Just like when we tend to be critical towards our father or elders. Whatever the misdeed they have done, they were tried in the court of law. Whatever the verdict, they cant be blame. Go ask the judiciary or go ask the executive if verdict not being enforced. Better still, ask ourself why we decide to elect the govt that act as it is before or now.

Randy Barat  says:

To Bugisbentanjohorean,

So what manner do you propose for people to criticise the Royal family if they misbehave? I actually don't blame the Royalty for misbehaving, I blame people like you who is blindly loyal in defending them. What incentive is it for them to behave if there are no repercussions for their bad behaviour. And the Gonvenment is to be blamed as well for not putting their foot down on this nonsense.

johorean  says:

can please all of these nonsense stop?

can we please let the late sultan rest in peace?

what ever he did before,it's just a history and it's indeed between him and god...

who r we to judge him?only god can judge him..we are only human being...and so does him....

i am a pure johorean...i love my sultan,i love johor very much even now i'm not working at johor...

and yet i'm so proud to be johorean..

our late sultan,as i know was a great sultan...

he himself, his son, tengku ibrahim (a.k.a as tengku yem) and his grandson, tengku ismail, was a great man..

why all of the bad stories come up as soon as he died?

why dun all the stories came before this?

please,let him rest in peace...

Randy Barat  says:

What is this nonsense about - who are we to judge him? Everybody has the right to judge anybody. Throughout our life we judge people, that is how we decide who are our friends and who are not. And how do we judge people? We judge people by their behaviour.

And from His Royal Highness documented behaviour, I would respectfully disagree that he was a great Sultan. Having said that, his son, tengku ibrahim (a.k.a as tengku yem) and his grandson, tengku ismail are not great men either. At least not yet.

And I hope for his sake, God would look kindly on his life. Theres a lot to answer for.

To answer all the question about us 'blindly' defending our royalty it due to that the only thing that we have left...Malay Royalty beside our Malay Regiment. As for me, all the fact or myth bout The late HRH Sultan Iskandar its just a normal act and behaviour of a Sultan or King all over the world past and present. That what make them different from the subject. I've been once been step by the HRH Sultan Iskandar on my foot due to my army boot not shining enough to his level of expectation ( its really shine actually and passed the army par) and i still remember at the same Military ocassion ,when a few 2 and 1 star Army General worried about being passed on the shining of their shoes or boot. This incident will kept as a good and hillarious memory between the soldier and officer that witness them all. May HRH remain in peace. Amin

Dear Randy Barat,

`What manner do you propose for people to criticise the Royal family if they misbehave?' - You tell me. I thought you are the `know everything' type. Unfortunately i guess you BLINDLY swallow whatever fed to you w/o researching. And i thing you dont deserve to be a Malaysian, if you are one for not knowing the culture and tradition of Malaysian society.

`I blame people like you who is blindly loyal in defending them.' - If you read my earlier posts, you should appreciate how I became `blindly loyal' as you said. I had the opportunity to have them on my other side before being loyal, do you? I guess you are the one who is BLINDLY accepting whatever being told to you without gathering the facts.

`And the Gonvenment is to be blamed as well for not putting their foot down on this nonsense.' - You are and infact we are to be blame for allowing such a government to exist. Unless obviously if you have not had the opportunity to fulfill your responsibility in the ballot box. And if that is so, I am wasting my time arguing with immature person.

Dear Kamal,

Spot on! If anyone do not agree with the royalty, there are three options available. Firstly let the status quo remains and suck it. Secondly, change the system if you can and stop whinging. Thirdly bugger off to any country w/o a monarchy.

Whenever Almarhum Sultan Iskandar and his consort or now Sultan Ibrahim Ismail or Raja Muda visited Mersing, our town will be kept clean, we the ppl like that very much.

Raja Muda football team recently had a football match with our local football club. We gave a good fight, and the Raja Muda likes that very much.

Kembara Johor during HRH Sultan Ibrahim Ismail reign as The Crown Prince was a memorable affair that will stays in our heart as the common people.

We are all proud of Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, no matter what Wikifuckdia, the west, the pendatang or whatever stories or ideas you people comes up with.

Its good to be the King, and only one human being will be King at one time, and he is the CHOSEN ONE. We will kept on praying, may Allah S.W.T blessed Almarhum Sultan Iskandar soul, and Royal Johore shall rise to be the greatest.

As for Iskandarsuckmykote, Randy Barat, Newgen and whoever posted all the bad words, be afraid, be very afraid and pray hard. You guys started this war but you don't know what you're fighting for or who your enemy was.

You people cannot change this world with your hatred and anger. It was always love, kindness, sharing and giving as what the past and current Sultan of Johore did that make us true Johorean the greatest.

How about the existing Anglo Saxon that populated the Isle of Britain?..Should they and their royalty cant claimed themselves as British?..Discussion never end up,there are so many books, manuscript and links if anybody try to be kindda "academical" here.

Just to share, .... back several years ago. At the Prince Hotel KL. Wedding function. Im sitting with my fellow Malaysian non malay dude. The Late HRH Sultan Iskandar were the royal guest of honour. Its a Malay wedding. Couple of minutes before the function end, my non malay dude suddenly leave the table and dissapear. Later i found him at the Lobby entrance wating to see the Royal Motorcade. when i ask him why he standing there? This is the comment , " Kamal ah, if we wan to see secret service in action, we need to go to US maa, here oso can see wat". Happen that he like to watch how the police and JMF in action while the Royal Motorcade start to move with all the sirens and watever. Not to mention he like to see The Bentley and the Royce as well (me too!).

Beside being childish, Im still proud that only the HRH's, the Regents, PM and DPM have the police escort in this country. Though sounds silly, but for me its a statement....that this land still have the Royalty....Malay still ruled the country and we are still around for the next century.

Still a rilex note.

Cheers my fellow One Malaysian!!!

As long there is a Malay Regiments....The Chief Of Armed Forces, the IGP and the PM position occupied by Melayu, then the throne of HRH's Raja-Raja Melayu stil exist. That the calculation.

What we can do?

Start being One Malaysian la, tolerate among us here and there. Leave in harmony.

Hopefully... in a future if im bounce to somebody in JFK or Newark Airport...and the dialog run like this " Excuse me, are you from Chennai?"..." Sorry broh! I'm MALAYSIAN Indian!"

Point is...

I think the lineage of Johor royal family is cursed, starting with the late Sultan Johor himself. It's in their genes, they just have show how powerful they are. Take away their bodyguards and their guns... They are nothing! There's something deep inside of them that just wants to kill/hurt/humiliate people. Take his grandson for example, 2 years ago he decided to pistol-whip another member of a royal family. What the F*** is up with that!? If the lineage had changed to Tunku Abdul Rahman instead of Tunku Iskandar when Sultan Ismail passed away, maybe things would be different.

Desmond  says:

@unekspekted

your thinking that any royalty (in general, be it malay or otherwise) has the right to kill at will is most twisted. if all the royalties behave this way in the modern day, they ought to have their asses dragged into prison. having balls is not a good enough reason to take the lives of an unarmed and defenseless man. if they had balls, they would have let their opponents a chance to defend themselves, one on one, a gun with a gun, a fist with a fist. no body guard intervention, that is balls!

as royalty, you should behave in a proper manner where the general population can respect and see you as a role model. it would be very difficult for the common person to think that his/her king can kill someone and say that it is their right to do so.

i have no problems that the royalties can live a good life, in a way, they deserve it as they used to be kings of the land and it was taken away by means of politics (in Malaysian terms, they were tricked by the British). however, i stand against taking or injuring ones subject.

Lastly, may HRH Sultan Iskandar rest in peace. From the posts above, one can tell that he has his own set of detractors and supporters, but HRH has passed on. Let it be, there is no need to dig up the past. God bless his soul.
