Summer Hours- A family revolving story!

Featuring Juliette Binoche, Charles Berling and Jeremie Renier, Summer Hours is all set to lure the audiences on May 15, 2009. Directed by Olivier Assayas, Summer Hours is a bittersweet drama of almost Chekhovian scale demonstrating the blows of inheritance and miserable fortune of a family as a whole.
In this movie the above mentioned three starts play siblings. All the three are living in their own world, with Binoche being a prickly designer in New York, Berling being a professor in Paris and Renier, a businessman residing in China along with spouse and children.
Through this film the director has tried to expose the nature of life and death and value of material objects, both monetary and sentimentally wise to the audiences. All the three brothers are called for their mother’s 75th Birthday at the home. There, it has to be decided that what will be done to the belongings and valuable things of her husband after her death. Berling wanted the materials to get passed to the next generation but his other two brothers have different plans.
The movie has perfectly demonstrates the different reactions of three brothers regarding their mother’s death. It depicts reality with utmost perfection. However, the film lacks a sense of tension.
The three brothers are supposed to decide the fate of their mother’s prized belongings, which one to keep for themselves, which one to auction and which one to offer to the Musee D’Orsay. Further they were asked to reinstate their identity to make everyone aware who they are in reality without their mother who grew them into adults.
All the three brothers perfectly played their roles effortlessly. The initial scenes are filled with noises of the children of three brothers. Each actor has tried to approach art in a different manner. The most attractive element in the film is Director’s sympathy for his characters. Summer Hours is deprived of any villain that makes it a complete family film to watch. After the completion of difficult decision, the director has turned the attention towards next generation.
It is an IFC Films release which is 102 minutes in duration. I would give three stars out of four for this sweet-bitter drama.
